Stellar Coffee Company (Roswell, New Mexico)

Stellar Coffee in Roswell, New Mexico

Who knew one of the best espresso drinks I’ve ever tasted would be found in the tiny downtown of Roswell, New Mexico? Just goes to show that some of the best hidden gems are found in the most unexpected of places!

In addition to the most delicious espresso drinks ever, you can treat yourself to one of the most
delicious truffles ever (plus they are dairy/gluten-free too for anyone following a special diet!). Not a coffee drinker? Then you must try out the Green Tea Matcha Latte!

The decor here is really interesting. As you can see in the photo below, there is a lot going on! I’ll take weird over a bland, typical chain any day!

Waldorf Astoria Tea Lounge (Las Vegas, Nevada)

Nice views of The Strip from the beautiful Waldorf in Las Vegas, Nevada

Located on the 23rd floor of the classy, zen-like Waldorf Astoria in Vegas (formerly the Mandarin Oriental) is a spectacular tea room which offers the most amazing views of The Strip, along with the most relaxed setting in the city.

If you are like most, you probably have not heard of this little gem. Most tourists come and go only seeing the big attractions, however, it’s the little gems like this that make Vegas so special. I come here when I want a break from all the craziness. I like that I can still feel like I’m part of all the excitement (thanks to the fabulous view), only without actually pushing through crowds.

At the Tea House you can have it all: exciting views of The Strip plus the ultimate in relaxation. What could be better than sipping your favorite tea (all the traditional black, green, and white blends along are available) while gazing down at the bright lights of the city? Non-coffee drinkers can opt for a hot chocolate, a glass of champagne, or a delicious espresso from Illy. Or visit the adjacent bar for something a bit stronger.

Late for the Train (Flagstaff, Arizona)

Late for the Train Coffee Shop in Flagstaff Arizona

Late For the Train, a local Flagstaff roaster with 2 locations to choose amongst, offers a convenient location along Hwy 180 en route to Snowbowl and The Grand Canyon. This particular location, which is housed in an old gas station from the 60’s, offers a cozier, more unique setting than other coffeeshops in town.

While living in the city, I frequented pretty much all the local coffeehouses, with this one being the one I returned to most often. I really love their Americano – look at that creama layer! They offer the best signature drinks and mochas in town. Try the Dark Chocolate Mocha – if you love dark chocolate and coffee, then you will adore this drink! I also love their breakfast burritos.

The Americano: so basic, yet so good!

The funky setting includes an outdoor seating area where the gas pumps once used to stand and dozens of funny bumper stickers plastered all over the counter. Quite a change from the more standard choices offered in town.

Late for the Train is the perfect place to enjoy your morning caffeine fix before spending the day exploring Arizona’s natural wonders. Just be sure to arrive very early – this place gets crowded!

Update: The Fort Valley Rd is closed (bad decision in my opinion), however, you can still enjoy great drinks at the downtown cafe.

Location: 1800 Fort Valley Road, Flagstaff AZ 86001

What’s nearby?: Any of the city’s incredible hiking trails. You can check out my hiking guide for a list of my personal favorites.

Cartel Coffee Lab (Arizona)

Cartel Coffee Lab in Tempe, Arizona

Cartel Coffee Lab, with numerous locations scattered throughout metro Phoenix and Tucson, is always there for you when you need a pick me up. In a sea of endless bland coffee chains, this roaster really stands out for their unique ambiance and delicious drinks.

Anyone looking to avoid the big chains in favor of small, independent businesses will appreciate a visit to Cartel.

The espresso drinks are a bit pricey, however, well worth it for the smooth, rich, and creamy flavor.

One of my favorite locations is the Tucson cafe located near the downtown. This shop features a big open space with lots of eclectic decor.

Indian Gardens Cafe (Sedona, Arizona)

Indian Gardens Cafe in Sedona

Located near the end of the amazing Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive in Northern Arizona, is a cute little cafe/coffee shop known as Indian Gardens. After trying this out for the first time, I came back here pretty much every weekend while living in Flagstaff. They serve the best breakfast food and coffee in the area – period. My entree of choice is the Grains and Greens bowl which includes eggs, avocado, butternut squash, sauteed kale, and potatoes.

And the cozy outdoor patio is just perfect on those mild Sedona spring, summer, and fall mornings. That is if you can score a seat (this place gets busy by mid morning!).
