What makes a coffee shop great? Awesome espresso drinks? A cozy or eclectic setting? Outstanding service? Ultimately, I think the difference between a basic and amazing coffee experience comes down to a combination of all 3. Luckily, you can find at least one interesting coffee shop almost anywhere you go, perhaps even in your own hometown.
I seek out indie coffeehouses no matter where I travel instead of resorting to a common chain. The shops featured in my guide all offer: excellent drinks, friendly service, and a unique setting. Some have the added bonus of being located nearby some of the country’s most interesting attractions.
After 25 years of never drinking coffee, I finally tried out my first cup one random day and have been hooked ever since. Nothing beats a lazy Sunday afternoon sipping a great espresso (or 2). In my quest to find the perfect coffee shop, I have found many worthwhile options, however, I am still holding out for the best. So, feel free to share some of your personal favorites as I am more than willing to travel for the perfect Americano!
Indian Shores Coffee Company (Indian Shores, Florida)

This cozy little Gulf coast gem is located just blocks away from the quiet shores of one of my favorite Gulf Coast beach: Indian Rocks. Indian Shores has a lot going for it, most notably the most amazing espresso drinks ever, and a prime location nearby one of Tampa Bay’s best (and fortunately least visited) beaches.
What really sets this one apart (asides the great beach location) is the breezy outdoor patio (perfect for relaxing on those mild, sunny Florida fall/winter mornings). I love their Americano and homebaked goodies. They serve awesome muffins including a wonderful morning glory. It’s definitely on my list of best Tampa area coffeehouses.

It gets even better. Every Friday is open mic night, so you can grab a seat on the outdoor patio, enjoy a glass of wine, and sit back and relax as all your cares melt away.
My perfect day out on the Gulf usually involves sitting on the deck of this coffeehouse with an Americano and croissant, followed by a relaxing walk at Indian Rocks Beach.
Location: 19221 Gulf Blvd, Indian Shores, FL 33785
What’s nearby?: Beautiful Indian Rocks Beach, a local gem known for its’ many seashells, big waves, and quiet atmosphere.

Mozart’s Coffee Roasters (Austin, Texas)

Being located directly on beautiful Ladybird Lake, Mozart’s Coffee Roasters definitely wins the award for offering one of, if not the most, attractive settings in Austin. And fortunately for coffee lovers, the drinks are just as good as the views!

Who could resist a bottomless cup of rich dark roast coffee accompanied by serene lake views? It really is an amazing place to enjoy a cup of coffee, especially on a lazy weekend afternoon. I haven’t come across too many coffeeshops facing a lake so this was a nice surprise. An on-site bakery is there to tempt you with a nice treat to go along with that cup of joe.
And, in keeping up with “Keep Austin Weird” theme, the company puts on an extravagant Christmas light show each year. Odd for a coffee shop to put on such an amazing show, however, that’s why it’s so great! If you find yourself visiting Austin near the holidays, be sure to enjoy a hot chocolate or seasonal drink while taking in the bright lights of the season.
Location: 3825 Lake Austin Blvd, Austin, TX 78703

What’s nearby?: Lady Bird Trail, a 10 mile paved running/biking/walking path around a gorgeous lake.
Somethin’s Brewin’ Book Cafe (Lakeville, Massachusetts)
Update: Closed

This former library-turned cafe is the ideal place to catch up on some reading, relax, or simply enjoy a fresh cup of coffee amongst friends. Formerly the Lakeville Public Library (built in 1914), this shop retains the classic charm, complete with shelves and shelves of books which you can browse through over a great cup of joe. I love the cozy, homey setting with the old-fashioned fireplace and original hardwood floors. While living in nearby Fall River, this was my go-to place.

Staff is always friendly and happy to be there, it’s never too crowded, and the music is never too overpowering.
Somethin’s Brewin’ really has a local appeal and one can easily see that the staff cares about the business, rather than merely operating for a profit. This is evident in the monthly small business spotlights held to help community members get news of their business out there.
Coffee is always top notch, with several roasts available. Oh, and their quiche is awesome.

Somethin’s Brewin’ is one of those rare places that you can visit year-round and never feel bored. As the scenery outside changes from beautiful green trees, to the bright colors of autumn, to a snowy winter wonderland, so does the charming indoor decor.
Location:241 Main St, Lakeville, MA 02347
What’s nearby?: Gorgeous Myles Standish State Park, offering miles and miles of biking and hiking trails through pristine New England forests. I recommend the 2.5 mile long Reservoir trail.

Copper Kettle Tea Bar (Foley, Alabama)

One wouldn’t think of Alabama first when it comes to great tea/coffee shops. However, a visit to the quaint little Copper Kettle Tea Bar in Foley might just make you change your mind. While on a quick overnight stay on a long road trip, I discovered this friendly little local teahouse offering the most charming setting. It’s super eclectic which is something you don’t get to see that often nowadays.

The decor both inside and out is just lovely with all sorts of tea knick knacks and vintage items, along with the a cozy little patio for enjoying Alabama’s mild fall and winter seasons.

The loose leaf tea list is extensive and staff is obviously passionate about tea, as evidenced by their enthusiastic recommendations and general knowledge. Tea tastings are offered throughout the year. Southern hospitality is alive and well at Copper Kettle: the staff is really as interested in your day as much as your tea experience. We had a great time chatting about different tea flavors and health benefits.
I recommend a delicious pot of White Peony for a bit of an afternoon pick me up. If you are not a tea drinker, their dark roast coffee is a great alternative. Also be sure to try out a home baked treat from the daily rotating menu.

In short, Copper Kettle is worthy of a visit alone for the laid-back Southern atmosphere and beautiful tea room!
Location: 106 N Chicago St, Foley, AL 36535
What’s nearby?: The beautiful Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, a 15 mile paved path running through Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Gulf State Park. What a great way to get out there and explore the beautiful nature surrounding this beautiful coastal town!

Mojo Risin’ Coffee Co. (Siesta Key, Florida)

This laid-back, beachy themed coffee shop is located in Siesta Key Village, a charming, old-fashioned dining and shopping area. I like to stop by for a cup of joe before hitting the gorgeous white sand beaches.
In keeping up with the fun-in-the-sun atmosphere, Mojo offers a casual setting, perfect for a relaxing, non-rushed coffee break. The setting here is so low-key, that you will be tempted to order another drink just so you can linger a bit longer. What a perfect start to a great day in Siesta!
The vibe is beachy and tropical, perfect for a stop before or after your day of fun-in-the-sun. Their motto is “It’s a good day to have a good day.” – Sounds good to me! The pastries are delicious and fortunately they offer a number of vegan selections.

Linger on as long as you like and then be sure to check out Siesta Key by day (for the soft white sand and warm waters), Caspersen Beach (to collect rare shark teeth), and Venice Beach by night (for the amazing sunsets!).
Location: 5251 Ocean Blvd, Siesta Key, FL 34242
What’s nearby?: Beautiful Siesta Key beach, home to some of the whitest sand in Florida.
