Clear water at Indian Rocks Beach in Florida

What better way to spend a lazy afternoon than reading, swimming, and listening to the waves? Indian Rocks Beach, what I consider the hidden gem on the Gulf Coast, is the perfect place to escape for a day of R&R. Since moving to Tampa, we have been exploring a lot of the gorgeous white sand beaches. We moved here from Massachusetts so it’s definitely been a fun time exploring something different.

Although all Gulf beaches are known for their clear waters, the water here is much clearer than more popular tourist destinations like Honeymoon Island. It’s also a bit cooler which is why I prefer swimming here in the summer (when the water temps can often reach bathtub like temps).

As you can see in the photo below, I can actually see my feet in the water! To be fair all the beaches have clear water, but the water seems a bit cleaner here to me. You can see the fish swimming around as well, which is pretty neat. And, the light waves made the swimming a bit more exciting.

The sand is white, although not very smooth. It is a bit too rocky to walk around barefoot. Don’t they strain the sand at any of these beaches besides Clearwater!? Frustrating to say the least… On the bright side, this is one of the better options for shelling. If you walk in the water vs. the sand, it’s much easier on your feet.

One of the great thing about Gulf Coast beaches is that there is something different for everyone whether you prefer shelling, strolling, stand up paddleboarding, sunbathing, or entertainment options. Indian Rocks is best for shelling, swimming, relaxing, and wildlife sightings.

The most beautiful beach

Even though it is a bit rocky, this is still one of my favorite beaches for a stroll due to the gorgeous scenery and lack of foot traffic. I’ve jogged here a few times as it is much cooler than a park during the brutal summer season and I can always hop in the water afterwards. It is often too hot to run outside in Florida even in the mornings.

Being able to run with a fresh breeze, a great view, and the cool waters splashing against my feet and legs is a definite plus in my book. It enables me to take a jog without worrying about the high temperatures overheating me and slowing me down.

On my first jog, I noticed that the beach becomes less crowded the further you meander away from the main entrances near the parking lots. Because most of the beaches on the Gulf are a bit narrow compared to California beaches, there often isn’t enough room to spread out and enjoy the views.

After just one visit, this quickly became our go to beach. We typically always walk far away from the entrance so we can enjoy a deserted section of the beach to ourselves. If you have ever been to Clearwater during the summer or spring break season, you know that there is barely a few feet of space between you and the next person.

Overall: A bucket list contender

Update: After living in Tampa for ~3 years and checking out all the Gulf Coast beaches, I have to say that this low-key gem is my favorite. I return here time and time again to enjoy the laid-back ambiance. It’s less touristy and draws more locals than visitors, probably because of the lack of big business surrounding the area. There are a lot of charming local cafes, coffeehouses, and restaurants. You can check out my Indian Rocks tourist guide for more details.

If you visit early in the morning, it’s not uncommon to see manatees or dolphins. I did see a manatee come within a few feet of me while swimming once. I thought it was a shark at first, so a pretty scary experience! I’ve also seen a seahorse here which was really crazy and exciting. I’ve always loved seeing them at aquariums and would never imagine seeing one in the ocean. According to this article by Ocean Conservancy, it’s is rare to see them in the wild as they blend in well with their environment. I consider this one of my most exciting experiences to date.

Overall, I would say this is the best beach to “take it easy.” There are no fancy amenities nor much in the way of recreation (no bike paths, boardwalks, volleyball nets, etc.). However, if you are looking to relax, then I recommend stopping by and enjoying a 3 mile walk along the blue-green waters. Most of the tourists skip this one over (prob due to the lack of commercialization and hotels) so it stays pretty quiet all year.

Also, we recently found out about this great little bird habitat called Seaside Bird Sanctuary (it’s just minutes away). They rescue injured birds and release them in the wild when they are healed. Also, there is a great viewpoint of the beach! It’s free so check it out.

Location/Parking details

Parking is located at 1700 Gulf Blvd, about 20 minutes from Clearwater and 40 minutes from St. Petersburg. Parking is $2.50 per hour and subject to change. Holiday weekends are definitely jacked up.

Across the street: The best cup of joe in the Bay

Before your visit, I recommend enjoying a coffee and pastry on the gorgeous outdoor patio of Indian Shores Coffee (one of my favorite local coffee shops in the Bay). I ran into this shop randomly one day and it became my favorite stop before hitting the beach. The coffee is so good that I sometimes drive all the way over here just to enjoy a cup on the lovely shaded patio.
