Best pastries at Mediterra Cafe in Sewickley, PA

Mediterra is a wonderful bakery/coffee shop with 3 locations in the Pittsburgh metro (Sewickley, Mt. Lebanon, and Lawrenceville). This is the place to go for breakfast, whether you are seeking a quality cup of coffee, a creative espresso drink, a delicious homemade pastry or dessert, or a savory/sweet breakfast entree. This local gem serves excellent coffee and pastries, offers a full breakfast and lunch menu, and bakes fresh artisan bread daily. Additionally, the on-site market is loaded with specialty artisan cheeses, jams, chocolates, and more.

Nick Ambeliotis founded Mediterra in 2018, and the first cafe opened in Sewickley. In 2020, the second Mt. Lebanon cafe opened. In spring of 2023, a third location opened in Lawrenceville. The Sewickley location is quaint and a bit quieter as it is located in the charming downtown district. Mt. Lebanon’s cafe is always busting with lots of people – oftentimes, it is hard to find a seat!

Great food & drink!

Breakfast Sammie at Mediterra Bakery in Sewickley, PA

Breakfast highlights include: Milk Bread French Toast, Four Grain Porridge, Almond butter toast, Quiche, Shakshuka, and The Breakfast Sammie. Pictured below is the delicious Shakshuka, a traditional Middle Eastern dish consisted of poached eggs in a savory tomato based sauce.

Espresso specials include a Matcha Latte, Chai Latte, and the highly regarded deconstructed latte. The regular coffee is great and includes a free refill and the basic, but delicious Americano is always perfectly made. Seasonal specials are offered throughout the year. Everything from a Peppermint Mocha during the winter months, to a Lucky Charms latte for St. Patrick’s Day can be enjoyed. Seasonal pastries always give you plenty of reasons to come back and try something new! Recent highlights have included a Pumpkin Cronut and an Egg Nog danish (pictured below).

5 Pastries to Try

Everything always looks so tempting in the display case, from the freshly made daily pastries to the indulgent desserts. Take a look at a few of the best! And don’t leave without picking up a fresh loaf of bread – I recommend the Red Fife, the Sourdough, and the Sprouted Spelt. 1. Cinnamon Roll

Mediterra makes the best cinnamon rolls in the ‘Burgh. As a bonus, they are also the cheapest pastry on the menu! For just $2.50, you can indulge in a “healthier” version of the classic treat. Unlike cinnamon rolls you find in the mall at Cinnabon, Mediterra’s creation is sweet enough to satisfy without being overly sweet.

2. Chocolate Croissant

Fantastic pastries at Mediterra Cafe in Sewickley, PA

Another one of my favorite pastry treats at Mediterra are the delicious chocolate croissants. A little bit of chocolate goes great with a rich cup of coffee. With just the right amount of chocolate sweetness, this is easily the best croissant in the city. No one else in the city makes croissants as delicious. Plain croissants also available, as well as seasonal specialities.

3. Pumpkin Danish

During the fall months, Mediterra bakes up a number of festive treats. The best is the Pumpkin Danish. Although they serve great danishes year round, this seasonal treat is worthy of a special trip this time of year. Enjoy a tasty Pumpkin Spice Latte as well! This is the best time of the year to indulge in seasonal treats. From pumpkin cheesecake, to apple pie pop tarts, to butternut squash danish, there is a little something for every autumn lover on the lineup.

4. Almond Bostock

A Bostock is a popular French pastry made with brioche bread and topped with a fruit glaze, almond paste, and nuts. It’s basically a cross between French toast and a croissant. It’s very filling and goes well with a nice rich cup of coffee. Mediterra offers different varieties throughout the year. Recently, I tried a delicious cinnamon apple creation.

5. Blueberry muffin

Mediterra’s homemade muffins are so delicious. I love that they are so fresh and full of flavor without being overly sugary. After trying muffins at numerous other coffeehouses, I can say that Mediterra serves the best. Treat yourself to a blueberry or chocolate chip!
