Taking a scenic nature stroll at this small, but lovely preserve is an ideal escape near beautiful, but busy Newport, one of Rhode Island’s most popular tourist destinations. Mike and I stopped here for a hike after a day out in one of our favorite coastal cities. While I love Newport, it can get quite hectic during the summer months.
Fortunately, I live in Massachusetts, so I can easily access the beautiful natural wonders of this underrated state. Emilie Ruecker is a beautiful hiking oasis located about 20 minutes away in Tiverton. There are no steep hills or strenuous stretches here, just a peaceful place to get away from it all. We had the entire refuge to ourselves, which made for a quiet, relaxing afternoon.
This place truly is a hidden gem – a wonderful quiet place to spend the afternoon exploring nature, taking photographs, and observing wildlife. The trails are flat, well marked, and nicely shaded. Diverse natural habitats include salt marsh and red maple swamp. Small mammals which inhabit the preserve include deer and fox. Birdwatching is also spectacular – be on the lookout for Osprey, Yellow Warbler, Snowy Egret, and Cooper’s Hawk. This is simply a great place to take a stroll and enjoy local wildlife watching.
Hiking trails
There are 4 short trails here; we chose to hike the Yellow and Blue Trails. There are about 1.5 miles of trails total if you decide to complete them all. This is not a place where you are going to get in a tough all day workout, bu rather a nice place to enjoy a leisurely weekend nature stroll. Along the way you will be treated to some excellent views of the Sakonnet River. Both trails are easy enough that I recommend completing both if you have the time.
A photo gallery from the Yellow Trail. As you can see, the trail is well marked which is nice. There is nothing worse than getting on a trail and not knowing which way to go. It turns what should be a relaxing experience into a stressful one. I love all the beautiful trees and the relaxing river scenery.

You will also enjoy nice views of the gorgeous Sakonnet River and Seapowet Marsh. Rhode Island is such a gorgeous state – so many lovely water views no matter where you choose to hike. It was so quiet here without a person in sight – what a change of pace from touristy Newport!
Another quiet escape I recommend in nearby Middletown is beautiful Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge. I recommend the Ocean View Loop which offers fantastic views of the coast, plus is an excellent place for birdwatching. This is another gem often overlooked by tourists.

Tip: Following your hike, I recommend heading over to Newport for shopping and dining in a historic setting. I love all the local dining options here. The Lobster Bar serves great seafood and offers a nice scenic patio dining area on the water. For something a bit fancier, you can beat Mamma Luisa’s Italian restaurant. Their butternut squash ravioli is so amazing and the setting so gorgeous. You can check out my Newport vacation activity guide for more details.
Address: The Wildlife Refuge is located on Seapowet Avenue Tiverton, Rhode Island. Parking is free.
