Sedona is my favorite hiking destination. After living in neighboring Flagstaff for 2+ years, I have my favorites which offer big views for moderate effort. For the most spectacular 360 degree views of the stunning red rocks, I recommend the moderate climb up Doe Mountain. This is an underrated, short hike which offers outstanding viewpoint throughouts. While it’s a tough climb up the mountain, a series of switchbacks makes the trek a bit easier. On one note, this is not the hike for anyone scared of heights. There are some really scary drop offs going up this one!
As opposed to some harder hikes in the region, this one features just 400 feet in elevation gain, thus making it a great summit hiking option for anyone in relatively good shape. There are many harder hikes in town that do not feature nearly as stunning views. In my personal experience, this hike is a contender for “best of Sedona” considering the breathtaking scenery and relatively crowd-free atmosphere.

It’s not just the summit that is scenic here as you are surrounded by great views for the entirety of the hike. It’s really motivating and inspiring to keep going on when the scenery is so incredible. Somehow the views keep getting better and better until you reach the top of the mesa. Once you reach the top, it’s 360 degree picture-perfect views in every direction.
Views along the route to keep you motivated!

Likely, there will likely not be anyone else up here. In my case, it’s always pretty quiet so you can enjoy the views all to yourself. I really feel on top of the world when I reach this summit and look out upon all the amazing rock formations. It’s nothing but pure nature in every direction. Such a motivating hike and climb!
As you stroll around the mile long self guided trail, you will get to enjoy local plant life. Keep a look out for animal tracks as well. You could possibly see mule deer, javelina, coyotes, bobcats, and even black bears while hiking but I’ve never seen any evidence on this particular trail.
Check out a few amazing views from the summit!

Why this trail should be on your bucket list
The views are spectacular every step of the way and you will find yourself repeatedly pulling out your camera! Out of all the trails in this area, this is one of the few that I would recommend completing more than once – it’s just so spectacular. In fact, it is the one trail that I find myself going back to over and over again.
The ease of finding parking, the stunning scenery, the absence of heavy tourist crowds, and the fantastic workout one receives without too much effort, all combine to make it one of the most rewarding hikes.
Few hikes anywhere feature such tremendous views in exchange for such little effort. The climb up really is not that bad, that is unless you are terrified of heights as there are some pretty scary steep drop offs. For big views with no more than moderate effort required, this one should please. It’s motivating to feel like you climbed a mountain and reached the summit even though the trek is just under a mile. Overall, this one is a must-do for any fitness enthusiasts & photographers visiting this beautiful area of the Southwest.
