Slater Memorial Park, named after Samuel Slater, who built America’s first water powered mill, is the oldest and largest park in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The park is located about 15 minutes from Providence, making it a quick trip for exercise in a gorgeous setting.
Mike and I visit this park frequently, being a resident of nearby Fall River. It’s easy to get over here during the week for some after work exercise and also a beautiful place to enjoy nature for a few hours on the weekend. I really love this park because there are so many attractions including a paved bike path, a small lake with paddleboat rentals, an amazing dog park, and a historic carousel.
The oldest Looff Stander Carousel
This park holds some historical significance which makes it extra interesting. In 1976, the park it was added to The National Register of Historic Places. The most iconic attraction here is the Looff Stander Carousel (which happens to be the oldest in the world). The carousel was built in 1895 and installed in 1910.
Fortunately, the pricing is still back in the old days as well! A ride will cost you a mere 25 cents! Open everyday in July and August, and on weekends in April, May, June, and September. 2025 Update: Rides are now $1 (still a great deal).

A park with so many great attractions
There is a nice gallery here by the Rhode Island Watercolor society. It was founded in 1896 so it is one of the oldest in the US. Today, there are over 300 members. Best of all, admission is free on Thursday & Friday, from 10am-4pm, and on Saturday, from 10am-3pm. I recommend a quick stroll if you will be at the park around this time.

My favorite thing to do here is biking on the gorgeous Ten Mile River path. It’s a bit short at 3 miles but such a clean, easy ride. The path is newer than many of the others we have explored in the area. It’s flat and paved and really enjoyable. I also love biking next to the forest and water. It is really. nature at its’ best. Although short, this is one of my favorite bike rides in the state. I haven’t made it over here in the fall yet, but I imagine it is gorgeous with all the foliage.

There is also a beautiful pond to take a walk or jog around. You can also fish for largemouth bass if interested. During the summer months, they offer paddle boat rentals for $5. The 30 minute rides are available everyday from 11:00am -6:00pm (Check with the park for the current time and price changes). We usually take a few loops around the pond just to enjoy the scenery. I would love to come back and enjoy a paddleboat ride (I haven’t done this in forever!).

The Daggett House, built in 1685, is the oldest surviving building in Pawtucket. Tours are available from June-September from 2-5pm by appointment. During your tour, you will be able to see antique furniture and Colonial pewter used in Revolutionary War. I recommend stopping by if you are a history buff.

Daggett Farm, the former site of Slater Zoo, now operates as a petting zoo. Today, you will find numerous small animals including goats, roosters, donkeys, and more. It is open year round, Mon-Fri, 10:00am-5:00pm. Admission is free. Greenhouse tours and concession stands available.

Other park amenities include hiking trails, tennis courts, picnic tables, and a dog park. The dog park is the most beautiful I’ve ever come across. It is so spacious with so many amenities for the dogs. Best of all, it’s free! We took my sister’s dog (Cosmo) here for a little exercise. He really loved the park and was actually crying when we left! I can’t wait to take him back again sometime!

Slater Memorial Park is a beautiful park to visit, whether you are a resident of the Providence metro or just visiting. The combination of recreational activities and history attractions really cannot be beat in this area. I love coming here during the spring and summer months for a beautiful bike ride or walk around the pond. I have yet to visit during the peak of fall, but can’t wait to bike and hike and enjoy nature surrounded by pretty foliage. Definitely check it out if you are staying anywhere nearby!
While you are in the vicinity, I also recommend checking out my guide to the best of Providence which includes historical and recreational attractions.
