Blue Plate Diner - Middletown, RI

Mike and I ran into Blue Plate Diner while looking for a bite to eat before our afternoon trip to Second Beach in Middletown, Rhode Island. We have been driving into the Newport region frequently since relocating Fall River. It’s an easy drive and there is a lot to do. Sometimes, picking a restaurant spontaneously leads to horrible results! Fortunately, we ended up randomly picking a local diner which offered fantastic food, great decor, and friendly service!

As health addicts, we appreciated a diner that actually cared about serving customers more healthy meals. It is very rare to find any breakfast place that serves anything besides greasy hash browns and sugary pancakes!

I was pleased to find out that this diner makes all their food from scratch. Also, their eggs come from local farms which is a big bonus for anyone who wants to eat healthier and also support local business. Mike ordered the “Grown Up Grilled Cheese,” which included Swiss, Buffalo Mozzarella, and Cheddar Cheese with tomato and pesto.

I ordered the California Omelette, which included avocado, sautéed mushrooms, tomato, onion, sour cream, and cheese. Both of our entrees were delicious and much better than traditional diner food.

Back to the 50’s!

My favorite part about this diner is the eclectic ambiance. This 1950’s style diner is revamped with a modern touch, making the ambiance a nice mix of old and new. The mix of 50’s style design elements like the jukebox and retro seating with modern design like flat screen TV’s was pretty cool.

It definitely kept us entertained while waiting for our food. You don’t find many places today that put a lot of effort into their design. We appreciate any businesses who actually spend some time designing their space to set it out from a boring common chain. This place is anything but that!

“Thou Shall Not Worship Golden Arches”

My favorite part about visiting this restaurants was seeing all the funny slogans on the ceilings. One of them said “Thou shall not worship golden arches.” I am not a fan of McDonald’s and prefer cooking at home or dining at healthier restaurants, so I found this sign hilarious.

Take the advice from this sign – skip McDonald’s and head over to Blue Plate Diner for a healthier home cooked meal. The unique ambiance alone warrants a visit.

I would definitely stop here again on my next trip to Middletown or Newport. Middletown is only a short 10 minute drive from Newport, making this diner a great breakfast stop on your route.

I appreciate the fact that they are trying to use mostly local food sources. Eating healthy tops my list of priorities when dining out. Great food, great prices, great service, and great decor are the highlights of this local diner. Don’t pass on this one especially if you are looking for something a bit healthier with a little bit of spunk.

What else to do?

Hiking at Sachuest Point – This is a gorgeous wildlife refuge featuring a few miles of nature trails. We love birdwatching and hiking here. There is a gorgeous little trail called the Ocean Loop which features some nice lookouts of the water. Be careful – this is a known tick hotspot. I had to pull one off Mike’s neck.

Second Beach – This is a really beautiful beach with great conditions for swimming or just relaxing. There are some nice views here and it is not located very far from the wildlife refuge, so you can combine both activities into a single trip. Be sure to check for red algae warnings before setting out for the day.

Cliffwalk – Newport is just 10 minutes away, and of course, always worthy of an extra drive in my opinion. This gorgeous coastal walk is a great way to view the famous mansions (at least the exteriors) without spending any money. A lot of tourists don’t even know this walk exists, and in my opinion, it’s easily the city’s best asset.
