Vermillion, Ohio: A Lake Erie Gem

I recently moved to the Cleveland metro area and have been exploring many sights both in and around the city. While many tourists complain about the grittiness of Cleveland, easy access to beautiful Lake Erie is one of the benefits of living in or visiting the metro region. Out of the 5 Great Lakes, Lake Erie is the 4th largest. Many gorgeous beaches, charming coastal towns, small town Main Streets, and beautiful preserves can be easily accessed from major Ohio cities. One of my favorite coastal towns is a gem called Vermillion. It’s an easy drive from Cleveland and worth it to stroll one of the more charming Main Streets in Ohio.
Vermillion is the best choice if you are seeking a quiet Lake Erie escape. Nearby beach destinations like Sandusky are a bit more hectic due to the theme parks. Vermillion, on the other hand, a small community, is known for its’ many festivals, beautiful beaches, historic lighthouse, and Main Street lined with independent shops and businesses.
The Vermillion Lighthouse
One of the standout attractions here is a gorgeous lighthouse which is actually a replica (built in 1992) of one built in 1847 that was eventually relocated to Lake Ontario. It’s right on the main beach – just a short walk from the downtown. Truly a beautiful sight to photograph. You will find some relaxing adirondack chairs where you can just kick back and take in the view. On a side note, Vermillion was known as the “Town of Sea Captains.”

Main Street
One of the more charming Main Streets in Ohio, the area is home to many independent shops and restaurants. Many of the owners are very passionate about their business, and it is always great to support the local community as opposed to the big chains. A few recommended gems:
Brummer’s Chocolate – This local chocolatier makes delicious homemade truffles and other chocolate treats. I tried the Black Forest truffle and savored every bite. Also you will find chocolate gift baskets and boxes and trinkets which make for great gifts for any sweet lovers.
Crystal’s Treasure Box – The owner, Crystal, is very passionate about seaglass and showed us many unique finds in her collection including a coveted fully intact Coke bottle. Here, you can find all sorts of unique art pieces that she made over the years as a result of collecting seaglass throughout the world.
Tails of Vermillion – Lots of unique treats and gifts for your furry friends.
The Olive Scene – Sample homemade olive oil flavors.
I am probably forgetting a few – you will find many unique vendors lining Main Street. The staff are all so nice and willing to share their stores and ideas for things to do around Lake Erie.
Dining on Main Street
You will find a variety of options here, with everything from ice cream sundae shops, to a fancy French restaurant. We chose to eat at the Woodstock Cafe, a unique 70’s theme cafe. Although the menu was pretty basic (sandwiches and pizza), the design was really cool with lots of colorful artwork and 70’s memorabilia. The vibe is a little odd and hippy-ish which makes it standout in a world of chains today.
Main Street Beach
This small beach is located just a short stroll from Main Street. In addition to seeing the lighthouse, you can also collect seaglass, bird watch, take a stroll, or go swimming. The scenery is beautiful and there is plenty of shade for anyone who prefers to stay out of direct sunlight. I recommend heading over here early in the morning hours and enjoying the tranquil setting all to yourself. If you need a cup of joe to wake up a bit, Brewed Awakening is a nice local choice.
East Exchange Park
Vermillion is home to several gorgeous public parks, the most scenic being East Exchange. This lovely gem is located just steps from Main Street. Pick up a local cup of joe from Brewed Awakening and enjoy the view.
Overall, I highly recommend a daytrip to Vermillion if you are seeking a quiet escape out of the hustle and bustle of Cleveland. The beautiful beach, lighthouse, and quaint old-fashioned Main Street really make this a wonderful summer destination.
