Review Details

Woolworth was a department store which once had locations around the country. Today, the Asheville building is used to display the works of local artists. The Soda Fountain is a retro 50's style diner located on-site serving traditional comfort foods. If you are craving a quick cheap bite to eat while exploring the sights downtown, The Soda Fountain should please.

As an added bonus, it is located within the same building as Woolworth Walk, a local art gallery featuring the works of over 170 talented artists. Do take a browse around after your meal - I have found some wonderful pieces to add to my collection here!

Food

The menu here is simple and includes most of your traditional comfort favorites. A hearty menu of sandwiches and soups includes options such as Tuna Melt, Chicken Salad, Turkey Reuben, and Egg Salad.

Vegetarian options include a delicious hummus veggie sandwich and a Black Bean Burger. Check the daily soup specials. I love the tomato basil, especially on the side with a sandwich.

Of course, the treats are the main reason you visit an old-fashioned soda fountain. Whether you are craving a milkshake, a float, a banana split, a malt, or an old-fashioned ice cream soda, you are in for a treat.

The nice thing about The Soda Fountain in comparison to other restaurants in the vicinity is the prices will also take you back to the "good old days." Lunch here is a real bargain with a meal for 2 costing no more than 30 bucks - a real steal in a pricey tourist destination like Asheville.

Service

Service is really slow and not all that attentive. While the staff is friendly enough, they could definitely check up on customers more.

Atmosphere

The nostalgic ambiance is what makes a visit to The Soda Fountain a must. Originally established in 1938 as the Woolworth Luncheonette, the space was restored in 2001 with the addition of special 50's touches to resemble the original design. The decor is fun and old-school, something you do not see much today unless visiting a retro diner.

Final Words

Definitely give The Soda Fountain a chance if you love old-time diners. While service could be improved, the vibe is appealing and the food tasty and comforting enough to satisfy after hours on foot exploring downtown.
