Oscar Scherer State Park is a great choice for Sarasota visitors who are seeking something a bit different than beaches, cruises, and tourist attractions. It’s located halfway between the cities, so a perfect alternative to hitting the beach. I really loved the beautiful tropical scenery here. One day after hitting Siesta Key, I decided to enjoy a little peaceful walk here to get away from the crowds for a bit. I now occasionally visit either as an alternative to the beach or as a relaxing add on activity.
This park is great for exercising and wildlife watching. There are 15 miles of trails with options for hikers and cyclists. Most of the trails are pretty shady, a must in the hot, sunny climate. Personally, I would recommend visiting outside of the summer season.
Trails are well-marked, flat, and pretty easy. As you can see in the pictures below, you will encounter a variety of interesting landscapes as you make your way through the trails. These include mangrove and cypress swamps, marshes, and tropical hammocks.

Wildlife Sightings
Your chance of seeing wildlife will depend on the time of day and season. Birdwatching is great here and the park is known for its’ high population of Florida Scrub Jays. In addition, you may come across the following wildlife: alligators, gopher tortoises, bobcats, deer, and bald eagles. Some animals like the bobcat are nocturnal and prefer to stay alone, so your chances of seeing one will be slim. On the other hand, you will probably get lucky and see a gopher tortoise. We see these turtles at parks throughout the area. They are super common and luckily super slow so easy to photograph.

Overall, morning visit is your best bet for seeing wildlife as there are less crowds. Anytime I encounter wildlife on the trails in Florida, it usually occurs earlier on in the day. Turtles and armadillos tend to hide from people. The trail map (which you can pick up at the entrance) will tell you which forms of wildlife are more common on which trails.
Canoeing and Kayaking on South Creek
One of the best ways to explore all that this park has to offer is by kayaking or canoeing through South Creek. Bring your own or rent one at the Ranger Station. Tours are offered on Wednesdays. I myself wouldn’t be comfortable kayaking in the area due to the presence of gators. I would be nervous about falling in the water or the gator tipping the boat over. I’ll stick to hiking. Along the way you will see many birds, beautiful mangroves and cabbage palms, and possibly a gator or 2.

Lake Osprey
The highlight here is beautiful Lake Osprey, which is open for swimming and fishing. You’ll need to make sure to only swim in designated areas as alligators frequent the area. Personally, I would never step foot in any lake in Florida due to the rare chance of an alligator attack. I’ve heard of so many horrendous attacks since moving here, so I would never risk it. I’d say just head over to Siesta Key if you want to swim without wearing about gators.
There is a small nature trail which winds around the lake which I recommend strolling. This trail is short, yet very picturesque with lots of palms and greenery. Being originally from the Midwest, I am still impressed by all the tropical scenery.

Scenic picnic areas
There are plenty of picnic tables scattered around the park, so I recommend skipping the overpriced restaurants and enjoying a nice lunch out in nature.

Why you should visit
I recommend taking a break from overcrowded, pricey tourist attractions in favor of enjoying some of the “Real Florida.” Grab your hiking shoes, pack a picnic, and enjoy a quiet day enjoying the easy trails here – it’s the perfect low-key break from the Siesta Key crowds.
Tips for a great visit
- Bring with plenty of water, especially on hot, humid days. As always, it’s best to avoid summer hiking in Florida. The fall/winter months are better suited for any physical activity.
- Visit early in the morning for fewer crowds and better wildlife photos.
- Bring with a camera. There are plenty of places to take great photos.
- Wear sunscreen. Not all of the trails are shaded.
- Wear gym shoes or hiking shoes. It will easier to walk the trails with the proper footwear.
