With year-round warm temps and absolutely no chance of snow, Tampa is far from the idyllic winter wonderland Christmas destination that I am dreaming about. However, the absence of a White Christmas does not stop Bay area cities from getting into the Christmas spirit.
I lived in both suburban Palm Harbor and Wesley Chapel for several years and had no problem filling my weekends with festive events, many of which are free. You do not need to spend a ton of money to have a great time for the holidays here. In this article, I will focus on a few of my favorite free displays. For my full guide to all holiday fun, you can check out my Christmas bucket list article.
1. Holiday Lights at Largo Central Park
One of my favorite shows is a spectacular park display in suburban Largo. It’s the biggest and best display in Pinellas County. There are over 2.5 million lights and you do not have to pay anything to seem. There are many fun themed LED displays and pretty lights on the trees. The park is rather large so you will also get in your workout for the day.
For an extra fee, you can take a ride on a carousel and enjoy the lights via a seven story Ferris Wheel. The event runs nightly from 6-11pm, from Thanksgiving weekend until just after New Years.

2. Holiday Lights at the Florida Botanical Gardens
Every winter for the past 20+ years, Largo’s beautiful botanica garden has transformed into a dazzling winter wonderland with over 1 million lights. Festive palm trees and tropical light displays give the event a unique local touch. The various nature displays fit in lovely with the garden theme.
Best of all, it is free to take a lovely walk through the best organized light display in Pinellas. ($10 pp donation suggested for anyone over age 12). As a side note, this garden is free all the time and worth adding to your Bay area bucket list. There are some nice gardens and walking paths here and it’s a wonderful place to birdwatch (as is most everywhere else in the region!).

3. Lights of Lake Park Estates
This festive neighborhood light display dates back to 1993, and continues to draw a lot of traffic. I found out about this great event my first year living in Palm Harbor. Three miles of continuous homes in 4 different neighborhoods all go all out with the most extravagant light displays. There’s always a house or 2 that goes totally “Clark Griswold style.”
It’s a fun time for the young and young at heart. Almost every house gets in on the action. While the event is free, donations support a great cause. Since its inception over 30 years ago, this event has raised over 1 million dollars for Suncoast Hospice.

4. Symphony of Lights at The Shops of Wiregrass
This open air mall in suburban Wesley Chapel transforms into a winter wonderland every December. The grand Christmas tree goes up mid November and the entire place is decked out in pretty lights by the first week of December. I really love shopping here because there is so much holiday cheer in the area. I love all the beautifully lit trees.
The highlight is a synchronized light show featuring dancing lights and popular holiday tunes. During this spirited show, you will experience a “Florida style” snowstorm! Enjoy the rare opportunity to wear a t-shirt while snow flurries dance above your head. While you are here, there are a number of great restaurants to check out. I recommend dinner at 365 Woodfired (their pizza is pretty delicious), followed by an espresso and dessert at Le Macaron.

5. Tarpon Springs illuminated boat parade
While many cities across the country host holiday parades, Florida is pretty unique in that most every waterfront community hosts a boat parade. What a festive and creative way to get into the holiday spirit! If you are new to the area, why not enjoy a new holiday tradition?
Some boat owners really go all out with crazy lights. Tarpon Springs, Dunedin, and downtown Tampa’s parades are always worth checking out. Best part of all, there is no fee to attend. Also, not freezing your butt off is always an extra bonus.
While you are in town, I recommend checking out the historic sponge docks. This area is rich in history and produces most of the natural sponges. You can shop for sponges all over town and they even sell cute holiday gift sets. I also recommend treating yourself to a wonderful Greek salad. The town is home to many authentic restaurants thanks to its’ strong Greek heritage. My Tarpon Springs guide has all the info on the best things to do.

6. Indian Trails HOA holiday lights
This subdivision in quaint suburban Palm Harbor goes all out with holiday extravaganza. Similar to the Lights of Lake Park, this is another top notch drive-through neighborhood light display. With so many pretty houses to see all in one place, this is a must-do for anyone who loves Christmas lights. My first year attending I saw visitors wearing light up necklaces, walking dogs with lit up collars, and even riding bikes with lights! It was a really fun time, so I returned once again when I moved back a few years later.
I’ve heard that some residents even move specifically into the neighborhood, in part because of this festive annual celebration. As a Christmas buff, I have to admit it would be pretty cool to live in a neighborhood that goes all out.
