Exploring Nature at Emilie Ruecker Wildlife Refuge
Emilie Ruecker Wildlife Refuge is an ideal escape in Newport County, Rhode Island. Mike and I stopped here for a hike after a day out in Newport. Tiverton is located about a 25 minute drive away. This beautiful hiking oasis is the perfect place for a nature walk. There are no steep hills or strenuous stretches here, just a peaceful place to get away from it all. We had the entire refuge to ourselves, which made for a quiet, relaxing afternoon.
Emilie Ruecker Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful quiet place to spend the afternoon exploring nature, taking photographs, and observing wildlife. The trails are flat, well marked, and nicely shaded. Diverse habitats include salt marsh and red maple swamp. Small mammals which inhabit the preserve include deer and fox. Birdwatching is also spectacular – be on the lookout for Osprey, Yellow Warbler, Snowy Egret, and Cooper’s Hawk.
Hiking trails
There are 4 short trails here; we chose to hike the Yellow and Blue Trails. There are about 1.5 miles of trails here if you decide to complete them all. Along the way you will be treated to some excellent views of the Sakonnet River.
