Summer is the time to get out there and spend some time outside after being cooped up in the house all winter. The winter season in Massachusetts can be so long, although I am quite used to long, cold, snowy winters as a Chicago native. I love hitting all the local preserves again, biking all the gorgeous rail trails, and most of all, supporting the seasonal local ice cream shops.
Somerset Creamery is a homemade ice cream shop with locations in Somerset and Cataumet (Cape Cod). Our favorite location is the Somerset cafe due to the convenient distance from our apartment. The family-owned business has been in operation since 1937! This place can get really busy and more often than not there is a huge line just to get in.
We are willing to wait because the ice cream is that good. The setting is very rustic and country-ish – it’s a great place to enjoy a treat on a hot summer night. Living in Fall River, we enjoyed easy access to the Somerset location. Really, if you live or are visiting nearby Bristol County, definitely stop by for a treat.
I like that they provide fresh, homemade ice cream daily and do not use dairy treated with rBGH. Even the waffle cones are baked fresh everyday! The smell of the fresh waffle cones being prepared as you walk through the door is so enticing.
20+ Handmade Ice cream flavors
Over 20 different varieties of homemade ice cream are available. Both traditional and unique creations can be found. At the Cape Cod location, a special Cranberry Bog flavored creation consisting of craisins, walnuts and dark chocolate is very popular. I would love to try this one flavor one of these days but my go-to is usually cookie dough which is always delicious. It’s so hard to pick against else as I just love this flavor. Mike, on the other hand, likes to get a more creative.
In addition, a few flavors of frozen yogurt, floats, and banana splits are also available. You can also buy a pint or quart to take home. A few sugar-free and sherbet options are also available for anyone with special dietary preferences. Unfortunately, no dairy-free selections are on the menu.

Our favorite flavors we have tried are the Chocolate Chip Vanilla, Cookie Dough, and the Peanut Butter Oreo. Everything here is delicious – you sure can taste the difference in homemade ice cream. Homemade is much creamier, more flavorful, and richer than store bought ice cream.
Cones cost about $4, with $1 extra for a waffle cone. On my next visit, I would love to try the Strawberry Shortcake or Peanut Butter cup sundae. They also offer a special flavor of the month. You can check out all current flavors and specials on their website. Recent flavors include: Apple crisp, blueberry pie, grapenut, and orange pineapple. All flavors are probably loaded with sugar and calories, but worthy of a splurge during the summer months.

What else to do in the vicinity?
While you are in the region, I highly recommend a self-guided tour of Battleship Cove as well as a tour of the infamous Lizzie Borden property. Since living in Fall River, we have enjoyed exploring all the historical sites in town as well as in Boston and Providence. This region is a wonderful vacation destination for history buffs. Surprisingly, it receives little press because it is overshadowed by both Boston and Providence (which I also love).
