Scarecrows at Hitchin Post Stables in Flagstaff

UPDATE: I do not think that this is stable is offering this event anymore, however, you can still sign up for a trail ride. Also be sure to check out my fall fun guide for more seasonal festivals and treats in Flagstaff.

Hitchin’ Post Stables is a horse back riding company located out in the country on Lake Mary Road in Flagstaff. The summer months are a great time to book a guided trail ride through the beautiful Coconino County Forest. It’s a beautiful place to get out into the country air for a ride. They offer 1-3 hour trail rides through the beautiful ponderosa pine forest. If you have ever visited this area before, you probably know that it is located within the largest ponderosa pine forest. The scenery is truly beautiful and rare.

We attended a seasonal Pumpkin in the Pines event which featured horse drawn hayrides, a pumpkin patch, a mini corn maze, and a petting zoo. We enjoyed the opportunity to experience a different side of fall as opposed to just leaf peeping (although the fall foliage trails around here are so amazing). Being originally from the Midwest, I miss the traditional pumpkin patches and fall festivals which aren’t all too common in northern Arizona.

After your hayride, we took a stroll around the pumpkin patch and corn maze. Pony rides were also available for the kids. Unfortunately, we ate before we arrived.

We have explored a few other small pumpkin patches in the region but they were nothing impressive especially when I am used to big productions in the Midwest. We felt the one here is the best in the area as it feels like a true pick your own patch. I think it’s so much more fun to pick out your own pumpkin as opposed to quickly grabbing anything at a grocery store.

The pumpkins were appropriately priced ($1 for a small, $5 for a medium, and $10 for a large). Getting out in the fresh mountain area and picking out your own unique holiday pumpkins is always a fun experience. After my visit, I truly felt like fall was in the air.

The corn maze was very small, suitable for small children. A larger maze for adults would be a nice future addition. A few more activities for the price you pay would have made the event a better value. Nevertheless, it’s one of the few rustic feeling pumpkin patches in the area.

The overall decor was appealing with many seasonal displays such as scarecrows, wagons, and other fall decorations. As I have not noticed many fall decorations anywhere around town, this was a pleasant surprise. The beautiful natural surroundings combined with the seasonal decor really added to the “fall is here” ambiance.

Pumpkins in the Pines runs throughout the month of October. I recommend stopping by for a visit if you find yourself traveling through Flagstaff around this time of year. Southern Arizona residents looking for a fun fall themed activity in the cool mountain air should be impressed.

I would say it is worth the daytrip especially if you combine it with one of the great hikes and a local restaurant. Although the hayride is a bit pricey (you can experience the same views or better on any area hike), it is a great alternative for those unable to hike, in addition to anyone simply seeking a fun seasonal activity.
