If you are looking to avoid the touristy Greek restaurants in Tarpon Springs, consider visiting something off-the-beaten path. Mr. Souvlaki is not located in the touristy sponge docks district, however, they serve great food in a cozy, no-frills setting. They offer a mix of traditional Greek fare with a few of their own specialities, including their famous Greek Chow Mein which draws in locals time and time again. I visit Tarpon fairly often on the weekends, and one day I decided to venture off the main tourist drag to try something new. I was pleasantly surprised with the food and low-key ambiance.
This restaurant has been a local favorite for over 30 years. They are most famous for their Greek Chow Mein. This unique dish includes sautéed peppers and onions, feta cheese, and rice pilaf with your choice of chicken, pork, shrimp, or veggies.
Their iconic Greek salad is delicious - definitely the best way to start the meal. The spanakopita entrée is a really great choice if you are craving something traditional. I really enjoyed this entree. While it is technically an appetizer, the serving size is definitely big enough to double as a meal.
The Fried Chicken pita is another excellent choice. Onions, tomatoes, tzatziki sauce, and secret spices and herbs, create a really flavorful sandwich. A bit pricey as you have to pay for fries separately, however, they are delicious, and thus, worth the extra fee.
Service was attentive although the food wait was really long. Make sure you have enough time !
The decor is pretty basic, although the space appears clean and well maintained. The blue checkerboard tablecloths add a nice old-school touch.
Mr. Souvlaki is a good choice if you are looking to escape the crowds at the more popular Tarpon Springs Greek establishments. Expect a no-frills setting and homestyle meals. As the Greek salad is the highlight here, make sure to save a little bit of room for something fresh and healthy.
