Massasoit State Park in East Taunton, Massachusetts

Mike and I have loved exploring all the small state parks and preserves around the Greater Boston metro. Since moving here, being able to access so many great recreational areas is what impresses us most. Massasoit State Park is a scenic state park located in Southeastern Massachusetts in the town of East Taunton. There are plenty of recreational opportunities available, including swimming, biking, hiking, and cross country skiing during the winter months. There are 6 lakes and ponds located throughout the state park, making it a great choice for fishing, kayaking, and other water activities. Lake Rico is a large beautiful lake which is popular with kayakers- there were plenty of people on the water enjoying the beautiful weather.

We opted for a nature walk this time around on the 2 mile Rico trail. There are 4 main trails here: Rico, Five Pond Loop, Bog trail, and the Adams trail. You can also walk along the paved road if you prefer. Most of the trails are pretty easy in intensity, although they could use better markage. The best time to plan your hike is during the fall season when you can enjoy the bright red intensity of the cranberry bogs; harvesting season is September through November. Another great trail is the Five Pond Loop which is 3 miles long and easy in terms of intensity

Take a look at the trail map to plan your route.

A quiet destination to get back into nature

The hiking here is so peaceful – you will barely see anyone else on the trails. It’s the perfect place to escape the summer crowds. If you tire of the hustle and bustle of Boston, I recommend a day escape here to soak in some nature. Leave the phone at home and enjoy a quiet afternoon of birdwatching. As you can see from the pics below, the trails are super woodsy and shady. Also, there are a number of tranquil streams and cranberry bogs to keep you interested. This is really a place you can refresh and rejuvenate for an hour or 2.

Next time, I would like to rent a kayak and explore the area further. Take a look at some of the pictures below that we took during our walk/visit to the lake! As you can see, this state is a gorgeous area to hike, rejuvenate, and enjoy nature.

Beautiful Lake Rico is a wonderful summer kayaking destination. Get in a great workout while taking in the peaceful lake scenery.

Breakfast in Middleboro

It’s always a good idea to fill up on a hearty breakfast before hitting any trail. If you are looking for a great local restaurant, I recommend stopping at Persy’s Place in Middleboro (about a 10 min drive, located at 43 Bedford Street) before your visit to the park! They serve great breakfast, portions are huge, and the ambiance is so cozy. I recommend the veggie quiche.
