6. Visit Zoo Boise, the state’s best zoo
Although not the largest zoo in the state (Tautphaus Park in Idaho Falls claims the title), Zoo Boise is a nice small, well-maintained zoo with an ideal location on the city’s beautiful Greenbelt. I love being able to chain up my bike and take a nice stroll – the Greenbelt offers so many interesting detours.
At this little zoo, you will find a nice variety of animals, well-maintained exhibits, and nice landscaping. Interesting exhibits include: the red panda, the sandcat, the Serval, and the African wild dog. This zoo is walkable with fewer crowds than most major city zoos, making it the perfect place to take a summer stroll. Tip: Visit on Thursdays for discounted admission prices.
7. Hike North Menan Butte
North Menan Butte, nicknamed “R mountain” by Rexburg locals, is one of the world’s biggest volcanic tuff cones. These 2 buttes are noteworthy as they are the only 2 US volcanoes which erupted in freshwater. The trail to the top of North Menan Butte offers beautiful panoramic views of the area. Once you reach the summit, you can explore the extinct volcano and take in the incredible views.
It’s quite a hilly journey to the top but well worth it in the end! I hiked this trail many times as Rexburg was a quick 30 min drive from Idaho Falls. Not only is the scenery gorgeous, but I rarely saw another hiker. This is a great place to get back to nature. Whenever, I hiked this trail my mind was completely clear of anything else but the exotic scenery surrounding me.

8. Stroll through the Art Museum of Eastern Idaho
This peaceful museum is a great place to take in some local culture while staying in Idaho Falls. The museum is small, although you will get to explore many beautiful pieces from local artists. It’s no Art Institute of Chicago, but a great place to visit if you are in the area looking for something unique or artsy to do. Best of all, it is located on the scenic greenbelt path so you can take a refreshing stroll before or after your visit.
Admission is just 5 bucks per adult, $3 for seniors, and $2 for kids. They also offer family deals.
Tip: Admission is free on the first Saturday of each month. Note: the first Tuesday of each month is free senior admission.

9. Take a leisurely stroll along the Snake River Greenbelt
Idaho Falls is home to a 6 mile recreational path, which features beautiful views of the Snake River and a 20 foot tall man made waterfall. Take a stroll around the river and feed the ducks or get some exercise in via jogging or taking your bike out for a ride. While living on the city, I trained for many races on this beautiful path including the wonderful Run to the Pub, an annual half marathon in Bozeman, Montana held around St. Patrick’s Day. I received one of my first ever half age group awards so I guess this path motivated me enough!
The Greenbelt is perfect for early morning summer strolls. Various events take place here during the summer months including a duck race, Riverfest, and the annual Fourth of July celebration.
Tip: Book a hotel right on the Greenbelt for easy access. The Hilton Garden Inn is a great choice.
10. Spend the day shopping and dining in Downtown Boise
Downtown Boise is a safe, clean downtown area with plenty to do, including: restaurants, bars, shopping, entertainment, and special events throughout the year. In terms of restaurants, you will find many of the popular upscale chains like The Melting Pot, PF Chang’s, and Ruth’s Chris Steak House. Also, there are numerous local establishments across the culinary board. Shopping includes both traditional mall stores and specialty shops.
One of the nice aspects of this downtown is that it is very bike friendly. Most businesses are bike friendly and offer bike racks. For those interested in history, I recommend touring the beautiful Idaho State Capitol building.
Tip: Park for free in Julia Davis Park and walk/bike to attractions.
