At 1.28 miles long, New York’s Walkway Over the Hudson is the longest pedestrian bridge in the world. This attraction is relatively new, having just opened in 2009. In its’ first year, the walkway received more than 3 times it’s predicted traffic. It continues to attract upwards of 700,000 visitors per year.

A little bit of history…The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge was built in 1889 and was later updated in 2008. The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During your visit, you will be able to read up more about this historic bridge, including the initial building and restoration process.

You can walk, bike, roller skate, or jog across the bridge. No matter which mode of transportation you choose, you are guaranteed amazing views! The views of the mountains and river are amazing, especially during fall season. As you walk across the 212 feet tall wonder, you are treated to beautiful panoramic views of the area. Open year-round, the walkway offers you the opportunity to view the region as it changes over the course of the year. The 4 distinct seasons offer new exciting opportunities to take in views all year long.

The Walkway is the perfect place for morning exercise, photography, or even a stroll with friends over a cup of coffee. Nature lovers, history buffs, and exercisers will all appreciate this great walkway. The distance is perfect for a refreshing jog. Runners will enjoy the incredible setting. Plenty of birdwatching and fantastic uninterrupted photo opportunities will please photographers. And, historical information along the walkway will entertain and educate those interested in the history of the bridge.

Picnicking tables and food are available before or after your walk.

A new elevator just opened this year, which will help to connect Walkway Over the Hudson State Park to waterfront areas like Upper Landing and Waryas Park.

Various events take place throughout the year, including: a 5k race, a holiday lights celebration, and a special 4th of July spectacular.

The bridge is located in Poughkeepsie, which is in Dutchess county, about half way between New York City and Albany. It’s a great day trip from many areas including the beautiful Catskills.
