Beautiful Pittsburgh skyline views from Mt. Washington

“The City of Bridges” skyline frequently ranks right up there amongst the best in the US. I would put Chicago at number 1, NYC at number 2, followed by the amazing & underrated Pittsburgh skyline. With 446 bridges, the city claims the title of“Bridge Capital of the World.” Many of these stunning architectural wonders can be enjoyed at various overlooks and you can even walk across 3 of them. In general, I have been really impressed by this city and all the attractions, both downtown and around the metro.

Pittsburgh is also known as the City of 3 Rivers. The Allegheny and the Monongahela join the Ohio River at historic Point State Park. Fortunately, there are plenty of free overlooks where you can see this triangle shaped landmark (known as the “Golden Triangle”) where these 3 rivers meet at the historic fountain. It’s such a stunning viewpoint.

During my time living here, I have checked out them all, my favorite being the iconic Duquesne Incline. Tourists and locals alike have been making their way up the historic incline to take in the enchanting city scape for decades. The incline was my first stop over a decade ago on my first trip here. Fortunately, there is more than one way to take in the mesmerizing scenery. In this guide, I have highlighted my favorite overlooks, most of which are free to visit!

West End overlook

Beautiful city views at the West End Overlook Park in Pittsburgh

Although this small park in the Elliott neighborhood does not offer many amenities, the view is fabulous and traffic remains low year-round. Be sure to visit on a cloudy day as it is near impossible to take a great photo on a sunny day.

From here, you can enjoy a picture-perfect view of the 3 rivers and the iconic Point State Park fountain. Note that the fountain does not run during the winter season. Views are fabulous both day and night, so I recommend planning a visit both times to take advantage of the stunning, yet dramatically different cityscape. You can also see the stadium fireworks up here. I would say this is the top low-key viewpoint (I never see many people around).

  • Address: Marlow St.
  • Note: Parking is free along the street.
  • What to do nearby: Explore the quirky Bicycle Heaven, “the world’s largest bicycle museum & shop.”

Duquesne Incline at Mt. Washington

Pittsburgh skyline views at night via The Duquesne Incline

Since being restored in 1963 (the cable car ride originally opened in 1877), the Duquesne Incline has been one of the city’s prime tourist draws. From the top of 400 foot Mt. Washington, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the stadiums, the famous Fort Pitt bridge, and the downtown skyscrapers.

Although you could drive up the road to Mt. Washington, it’s a lot more fun to take the cable car (at least once!). It’s one of the few remaining in the country, so for the historic significance alone, I recommend a ride. For anyone looking for a budget friendly alternative, simply drive up the road and enjoy the scenery. Views are stunning anytime, but even more magical at night. At the top there is a small history museum & gift shop. You can see some more photos in the original post I wrote about this cable car ride.

North Shore Riverfront Park

Gorgeous views of the Pittsburgh skyline via the Northshore Riverfront Park bike trail

This small park on the banks of the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers is located across the street from the downtown core, so the views are spectacular. I really like this viewpoint as the standout yellow bridge really makes a statement. Also, there is a really nice bike ride I like here called the Three Rivers Heritage trail (it’s mostly flat and goes on for about 10 miles). I like planning a ride here on a Sunday morning when there is barely anyone around.

Other notable tourists sites along the bike route include: a Mr. Rogers memorial (the show filmed here – you can learn more and see the set at the Heinz Center), a WWII Memorial, Heinz Stadium, and PNC Park. There is a bit of something for everyone along this trail, whether your interest lies in history, sports, or entertainment. Be sure to stop at Water Steps, a beautiful art display along the route.

Allegheny Landing Park

Great views of the Pittsburgh skyline via Alleghany Landing Park

This tiny park is great add on activity if you are already in the area but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend going out of your way. It is located between the Roberto Clemente and Andy Warhol Bridges. I love the view of the cityscape in between the 2 bridges – it’s a unique viewpoint for sure. In addition to the Rachel Carson bridge, these 3 gold painted, nearly identical bridges are referred to as the “Three Sisters.”

Amenities at this park include a boat launch and a few dining tables. I recommend grabbing a coffee from a nearby local roaster (Convive and Defer are both great) and enjoying the pretty scenery on a mild summer or fall day. Also, there are a few art sculptures to enjoy.

As a plus, you can easily walk across the Andy Warhol bridge (the views are magnificent!) which will lead you to some of the popular restaurants downtown (I recommend a local Greek gem called Christos).

What to do nearby: Check out The Andy Warhol museum, one of the largest single-artist museum destinations. If you like pop art, this is a must-see!

Grandview Overlook

Grandview is located atop Mt. Washington near the 2 inclines. This overlook is much more popular than West End, and thus, the vibe is not quite as peaceful. However, there are more attractions in this region including various restaurants offering great food and even better views of the city. Monterey Bay Fish Grotto is a popular place to take a date or celebrate a special occasion.

The views are pretty both day and night. It costs nothing to visit so be sure to view the skyline both day and night. If you are looking for a budget friendly alternative to the Incline, Grandview is the perfect alternative.

What to do nearby: Take a quick drive over to the Cultural District. This section of downtown is home to a number of restaurants, coffeehouses, and theaters. We recently saw The Nutcracker at the Benedum Center. It was an amazing experience!

Additional info

When is the best time to visit the city?

Summer is pretty crowded especially downtown with the sports stadiums. Also, most tourists tend to visit at this time as there are a lot of events on the lineup. Fall can be really busy too if the Steelers are playing at home, but the temps are perfect this time of year. Just avoid going downtown during a home game. Spring is ideal weather-wise and tends to be relatively crowd-free. Winter is a great time to avoid crowds if you can tolerate cloudy, cold weather (this is my favorite time of the year!).

Is there any free parking downtown?

You can typically easily find free metered parking on Sundays, especially early in the morning. I’ve never had a problem when I leave early enough. Pricing rates are a bit high per hour, especially near North Shore Riverfront park, so Sunday is definitely the best value.

Where should I eat?

There are a lot of great restaurants throughout the ‘Burgh especially if you like sports pubs, pierogies, and delis. Take a look at a few of my local favorites.

What other attractions should I put on my bucket list?

There really is so much to do here – I find it to be a highly underrated city which doesn’t receive nearly as much positive press as other major cities. Besides being home to 3 pro sports teams, you can visit so many incredible museums, enjoy gorgeous nature close to the city, and visit an amazing zoo/aquarium. Take a look at my attraction guide for more details.
