South Street Souvlaki
South Street Souvlaki is Philly's favorite local Greek joint. This place has won many awards over the years for serving the most authentic Greek fare in Center City. If you need a break from the tourist congestion in Old City, take a walk over to South Street (located just a few blocks away) for some delicious home-cooked Greek fare.
Food
South Street is your best bet for quality Greek fare near Old City. They serve all the traditional Greek favorites here along with a bunch of great lunch deals. Vegetarians and vegans will be pleased with the variety of choices. I recommend starting with a Greek salad. Really, you cannot visit any Greek restaurant without indulging in one.
The spanakopita makes for a wonderful starter, and really is filling enough on its' own if you want to keep it light. The Combo Platter, featuring tzatziki, baba ganoush, hummus, feta, dolmades, olives and skordalia, is another wonderful appetizer to consider. Additionally, Saganaki Opa, flaming Greek cheese, has long been a popular choice.
Consider a pita or Kebob for a light lunch. For those who cannot choose just one thing, there are a number of great platters to choose amongst. And do order a side of french fries - they are the best in town!
And finally, consider treating yourself to a Baklava and Turkish coffee to complete the meal!
Service
Service here is local and friendly. The food comes out a bit slow, but is worth the wait. We were treated to a free dessert at the end of our meal! Another bonus - the delicious complimentary pita bread kept on coming!
Atmosphere
While the decor is not overly extravagant, it's interesting enough to warrant a sit down experience. The place feels clean and appears well-maintained.

If you are craving quality Greek fare while visiting Center City, consider stopping by South Street Souvlaki for a filling, delicious, authentic, and affordable meal. There is no point in supporting a common chain when there are so many unique local establishments in the region - and South Street is just one of these neighborhood gems.
