Lunch at Mix in Flagstaff, Arizona

Review Details

Update: Sadly Mix now operates as a coffeeshop. They serve espresso and pastries. Their salads and sandwiches are so wonderful, it's such a shame. This was one of my favorite lunch spots while living in the city. Mix is a wonderful salad bar, soup, and sandwich cafe located in the Old Town Shops in downtown Flagstaff. It's one of the best choices in town for gluten-free diners as they offer gluten-free bread, croutons, soups, and salad bar toppings. A delicious made to order salad with a hot bowl of soup is the perfect filling and healthy lunch treat.

Food

Mix offers a handful of specialty salad creations or you can build your own from the extensive salad bar. You will fill out a little sheet with your checked off veggies, toppings, and dressings. Then the employee will add whatever you checked off without the need to follow them down and tell them every single ingredient. Even better, they offer frequent visitors cards so you do not have to fill in a new sheet each time you visit.

The nice thing about Mix is that they really load up your salad with toppings. You aren't skimped at all. And the toppings are very small and easy to scoop up on your fork - no big chunks of broccoli or anything like that. The GF croutons are amazing. I haven't seen many restaurants offer them.

Also, the housemade dressings are very delicious. All dressings are GF and a handful are dairy-free. Premium topping such as chicken and avocado can be added. Prices are pretty affordable. A make your own salad for 2 comes in under $20.

The daily soup varies by day. Some options I've tried include a delicious Vegan Split Pea and a Creamy Tomato Basil. A few more vegan options would be nice, however, the vegan split pea (offered only on Mondays) really is fantastic. As a helpful suggestion, a daily creamy vegan soup option would be fantastic.

Other menu options include sandwiches (Udi's gluten-free bread is available), GF and regular pancakes for breakfast, and egg sandwiches for breakfast.

Service

All staff at Mix are very friendly, which unfortunately is not the norm at most restaurants in town. The employees have no problem checking ingredients when inquiring about allergens. Also they are not stingy with the toppings: when you request more they will gladly throw in a few extra handfuls.

Atmosphere

Mix offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor seating area is bright, modern, and clean, although you won't find much in the way of decor. Sitting outside is a great way to take in all the action downtown especially during the Summer Nights on the Square Events.

Final Words

Mix has no shortage of options for health conscious, vegetarian, and gluten-free diners. With lots of gluten-free choices, from breakfast pancakes to a veggie filled salad with GF croutons served with a delicious bowl of hot soup, you will definitely enjoy a filling, well rounded meal. I've returned so many times and never experienced a bad meal. It's the best place in town hands down for a fresh sandwich or salad.
