I love taking a quiet stroll along the beach early in the morning before rowdy tourists arrive. I really love planning vacations to beach towns that still have an old fashioned boardwalk. What comprises a great beach ambiance? To me this means plenty of waterfront dining options, excellent views, offbeat attractions, and great recreational opportunities. Ocean City, Maryland is home to a top tier boardwalk with all the aforementioned amenities and more.
We recently saw it featured on the Travel Channel for a “best in the US” ranking. We knew we had to visit someday. One of our recent roadtrips took us right pass the area so we figured we would jump on the opportunity to check it out. Despite being the offseason, we were impressed. I loved the old time vibe and colorful businesses lining the side. Most all, it was clean, safe, and the views were gorgeous.

Mike & I were impressed with the cleanliness and upkeep of this boardwalk. We both agreed that the views were outstanding. Visiting during the off season had its pluses and minuses. On the bright side, the weather was cooler and the crowds were virtually non existent. Unfortunately, fewer crowds also meant many closed restaurants and rides. We were a bit disappointed on missing out on the Ferris Wheel ride, nevertheless, we still enjoyed the great views and beautiful biking weather. Who knows, maybe we will plan a summer trip sometime in the future.
2 miles of biking with scenic coastal views
A walk or ride along this easy 2.25 mile path is the perfect opportunity to explore all the unique restaurants, shops, and activities. There are numerous benches and snack shops along the way if you need to refuel or take a break. We brought our own bikes, but beach cruisers and surreys are available to rent by the hour.
Note: During the hectic summer months, bikes are only allowed during certain hours. Be sure to check the signs. Some of the attractions along the route include: tennis courts, volleyball courts, and the Life Saving Museum.

A nice stroll along the beach
The water was way too cold for swimming during our visit, but I imagine it would be nice during the summer season. The temps were perfect for a casual barefoot stroll. The sand is smooth with barely any shells. All in all, we enjoyed a leisurely stroll along a nicely maintained, clean beach. I was really impressed as it was so beautiful and quiet.

Jolly Roger Amusement Park
You can take in gorgeous views of the Atlantic while enjoying some of your favorite amusement park rides, such as a Ferris Wheel, roller coaster, and carousel. It’s a similar experience to the Santa Monica Pier (I love the coaster ride here) if you have ever been there.
The Ferris Wheel is pretty cool as you can enjoy views of the coast as you soar high up above the beach. Not interested in rides? You will also find Midway carnival games, popular local specialties such as Thrasher’s French Fries, and touristy attractions such as Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

Waterfront dining
Seafood lovers will have their choice amongst dozens of restaurants and cafes, many of which feature beautiful outdoor patios facing the water. Most of the restaurants seem to offer unlimited lunch and/or dinner seafood buffet specials. I recommend venturing a block off the boardwalk to enjoy a healthy, delicious lunch at Malia’s Cafe, a hidden local gem.

*Be aware that most restaurants and attractions are only open seasonally. Summer is definitely the best time to visit in order to take full advantage of all the amenities and beautiful swimming weather.
More fun
In addition to the attractions listed above, you will find plenty more including: dozens of miniature golf courses (It reminded me of Myrtle Beach), unique swimwear apparel stores, cruises, and more.
I enjoyed my short time here and would come back during the summer. Although, I was a bit disappointed that most of the restaurants we were looking forward to visiting were closed, we did take advantage of a nearly empty boardwalk and beach. It felt as if we had the entire place to ourselves! Riding our bikes in the cool spring weather as opposed to the hot, humid summer was definitely more comfortable.
This a great summer tourist destination with a gorgeous location on the coast of Maryland. It’s an easy weekend roadtrip for many big city dwellers. Everyone we came across was exceptionally friendly. And, the recreation opportunities were wonderful (there are bike lanes connecting Fenwick Island to Ocean City).
Plan a side trip to Fenwick Island
Because it is located just a few miles outside of Ocean City, I recommend a side trip to Delaware’s Fenwick Island. This relaxing hidden oasis is the perfect escape from the summer tourist crowds. Pull out your beach chair, some sunscreen, and a good book and enjoy the peaceful views! I thought the beaches in OC were quiet until we came here. The beaches were truly picture-perfect.
Also be sure to check out the Fenwick Island Lighthouse, which was first lit over 150 years ago. It’s a beautiful sight at sunset! Other area activities include kayaking tours and a waterpark. Check out this guide to visiting the island.
Tip: Take the bus or ride your bike (if available) to Fenwick Island. It’s only a few miles by bus or bike. Bike lanes connect Ocean City to Fenwick Island.

Tips for a great visit
Pick up coupon booklets to save on restaurants, attractions, and shops. These books are all free, and can be found in various vending machines throughout town. You can also print the coupons online. I found some deals in the Killer Coupon Book.
Visit during the off season for cheaper hotel rates. Just be sure to keep in mind that many restaurants and attractions will be closed. Also, the weather is unpredictable and you may need a sweater/pants and shorts.
Bring with your own bike if traveling by car. Bike rentals are pretty pricey. Biking on the boardwalk is allowed anytime during the months of October-April. However, hours are limited the rest of the year and on holidays. Plan your trip accordingly. Visit the OC website for seasonal hours.
Take the bus around town. The bus goes up and down Coastal Highway, making it the perfect, affordable way to get around town. An all day ride pass will only cost you a few bucks. Visit website listed above for the beach bus schedule.
Where to stay
There are many lodging choices on and near the boardwalk. Many of these hotels feature fantastic deals during the spring season (outside of spring break). Hyatt Place and Holiday Inn are 2 great affordable choices. Check the full guide to boardwalk hotel options.
