Moore Cove is one of my favorite waterfalls in WNC, an area packed to the brim with so many incredible natural sights. I have hiked so many waterfall trails since moving to the area. I really like this one in particular for several reasons. First off, it is located down teh road from Looking Glass Falls (a super popular roadside waterfall) in a more rustic setting. And second, it is one of the state’s few waterfalls where you can take a picture of you standing under it. For anyone looking to get in a workout and soak in some much needed nature, consider adding this hike to your must-do list.
The lush hike through the Pisgah
This 50 foot waterfall, located in the Pisgah National Forest, is easily accessible via an easy-moderate trek of just under a mile and a half roundtrip. The setting here is beautiful with dense yellow poplar and oak trees lining the entirety of the trail. Wildflowers are a beautiful sight during the late spring months. This trail is always peaceful no matter the foot traffic. The journey to get to the falls is just as enjoyable as the ending point falls view. Along the way, relaxing views of creeks and streams adds a rustic touch. The fresh scent of uninterrupted nature is in the air.

A few beautiful pics from the trail

There are a few moderately steep sections, although nothing too difficult. Be ready for a few minor uphill sections where a hiking stick may come in handy along with a few staircases. Thankfully, there are wooden walkways up over the creek crossings (shown below) so you don’t have to get your feet wet.

One of the cool aspects of this waterfall in particular is that you can stand behind the falls for a really cool photo opportunity. Don’t forget your camera! Be careful as the rocks may be slippery. Also, avoid climbing this waterfall (or any other for the matter) as many deaths have occurred.

Best time to visit
It’s best to hike this trail during the rainy season due to the waterfall’s naturally low volume. The flow can be quite spectacular following a few days of heavy rain, it can be reduced to a mere trickle during an extended dry spell. Typically, the late spring-summer months see the most precipitation in this region. While it can get hot and humid out here during the prime of summer, the dense tree coverage provides plenty of shade from the harsh sunlight. Get out here early to beat both the crowds and heat for the best hiking experience.
