The Black Cow is a wonderful family-owned ice cream shop in Uptown sedona. For a refreshing cool down after a long day of exploring in the intense Sedona sunshine, head over to The Black Cow for an ice cream cone, frozen yogurt, a sundae, smoothie, milkshake, or banana split. In addition to pastries, they also offer espresso drinks and pastries.
Black Cow makes all their treats fresh on-site daily. And it is not just ice cream. They serve just about every sweet dessert you can think of even homemade apple pie and coconut macaroons! Although a cool ice cream treat in a delicious chocolate dipped waffle cone is the ultimate indulgence on a hot Sedona summer afternoon. As soon as you get a whiff while strolling around Uptown, there is no way you are getting by without stopping in!
A dozen or so flavors are available although I recommend a true Southwestern specialty: the Prickly Pear. The ice cream is so creamy and delicious, and thankfully, not overly sweet. The ice cream is made using a high amount of butterfat, which creates the great consistency. Other flavors include: Oreo, Belgian Chocolate, French Vanilla, and Espresso Swirl.
And if you are hungry for a little lunch, The Black Cow is known to serve the best hot dogs in town (Hebrew National in a French Baguette). As I avoid meat, I have no opinion on the matter. They also offer a few other sandwiches which are made using local ingredients and high quality Boar's Head meats and cheeses.
Service was good, although the long wait is a little irritating, especially if you come in worn down after a hard hike!
Expect a long wait during the summer season. Everyone is hot and looking for a cool treat! It's worth the wait for a really good homemade ice cream treat as opposed to a standard Dairy Queen or Coldstone experience.
The seating area is pretty small, and thus, it's better to find a seat around Uptown or simply stroll around and enjoy the fabulous red rock views.
If you are a sweets lover, be sure to make some room on your Sedona vacation for a visit to The Black Cow. It's by far the best ice cream in the area. Post-hike is the best time to reward yourself with a cool treat - you burned so many calories on the trail - you deserve it! I am not overly fond of sweets, but I did really enjoy the Prickly Pear flavor!
