There are few choices in terms of dining in between Flagstaff and the Petrified National Forest. Your choices are limited to a few local restaurants or small chains in either Winslow or Holbrook.
After a long day exploring the gorgeous Petrified National Forest, we were ready to eat just about anything. We stumbled upon a local Mexican restaurant in Holbrook called Mr. Maestas. Fortunately, this turned out to be a delicious, filling, and budget friendly choice before the long drive back to Flagstaff.
Mr. Maestas offers a small menu of standard Mexican and American fare. You will find traditional American dishes like grilled cheese, seafood platters, and burgers. The Mexican menu is pretty simple and includes various enchilada, burrito, and taco plates.
We ordered the bean tostadas and the chicken enchiladas. Both were tasty authentic dishes. The complimentary chips and salsa and homemade sopapilla were a delicious start to the meal. They also offer a small selection of homemade pies and other treats daily.
Service was great, not overly friendly, yet efficient. Our waitress had no problem making a few small substitutions and was able to go over vegetarian options with us.
The dining area was casual, yet very interesting. An eclectic mix of decor including Route 66 memorabilia, Native American decor, various vintage pieces, and Christmas decor gave us something to look at while waiting for our food.
The decor was definitely more interesting than the bland design theme found at your standard chain. As you walk in you will see large pieces of petrified wood surrounding the building. They also sell affordable small pieces of petrified wood in the gift area.
Mr. Maestas was a nice random find on the way home from the Petrified Forest. It's a great lunch spot that will definitely fill you up after all that driving and walking through the forest. Here you will be able to dine on all your Mexican favorites while surrounded by the most random decor you will find in the area. I would definitely stop back for another great meal on my way to/from the Petrified Forest (which I highly recommend adding to your bucket list!).
