The Arizona Biltmore: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Masterpiece

The Arizona Biltmore, referred to as the “Jewel of the Desert,” is part of Hilton’s line of luxurious Waldorf Astoria resorts. It’s one of Phoenix’s largest resorts. Not surprisingly, it is one of the most popular tourist resorts in the state, especially during the prime winter season when the temps have finally cooled down. During the mild winter months, thousands of snowbirds from cold climates plan their escapes to The Valley of the Sun.
Mike and I decided to plan a quick summer getaway from Tucson to take advantage of the massively discounted Arizona locals rate. While we definitely did not get an escape from the harsh desert heat, we did enjoy the many lovely pools, beautiful landscaping, and great on-site restaurants. I highly recommend the locals summer getaway deal if you are seeking a convenient and budget friendly summer vacation. For anyone not used to the heat, keep it mind it gets really hot this time of year so expect this uncomfortable tradeoff for the discounted rates.
The gorgeous Biltmore Gardens
This resort is most famous for its’ lavish gardens and stunning architecture. The property was designed by Harvard grad and architect Chase McArthur, with Frank Lloyd Wright acting as a consultant. Wright was considered one of the best architects of his time, having designed more than 1000 structures, with over 500 built. We enjoyed walking around the gorgeous gardens with no crowds – one of the many benefits of toughing out the 100+ degree temps.

This property is considered to be an architectural masterpiece by many. Because the property’s grounds are so beautiful, they offer a guided tour. For more details, please visit the resort’s website. If you are looking for something interesting to do while visiting the metro, I definitely recommend booking a tour, especially if you are into architecture. While the shopping here is fabulous, there is actually much more to the city that tourists often don’t know about.

“Biltmore Block,” a version of the textile block that Wright used to construct homes was used for the entire building. These unique blocks were made into numerous geometric shapes (in palm tree trunk patterns) using sand from the desert. If you take the tour, you will learn more about the property’s unique architectural features.
A desert oasis with many amenities
Since opening in 1929, the resort has expanded to include 7 pools, several wings, and a 20,000 square foot spa. When originally built, the hotel only had one pool. The Catalina pool, designed by Wrigley, was said to be the favorite of Marilyn Monroe.
Rumor has it that Irving Berlin wrote the holiday classic “White Christmas” at this resort. As a huge fan of both the song and movie, this is pretty cool! I can see why he would be dreaming of being back in New York which is absolutely gorgeous during the Christmas season!

The beautiful gardens, exceptional service, and attractive mild winter weather have attracted guests like Ronald & Nancy Reagan and every President from Hoover to Bush.
Over the years, many modern touches were added. However, the design elements inspired by Wright still remain and the history preserved. Today you do not even need to leave the hotel with all the great amenities located conveniently on-site. 7 pools, an outdoor bar, 2 on site restaurants, High Tea on Sunday afternoons, 7 tennis courts, a fitness center & salon, and a variety of special seasonal activities will keep you more than occupied during your visit.
Although it was quite hot during our stay, we enjoyed the pools and restaurants. On a side note, the pool water was quite warm. I imagine it is hard to keep the water cool during the hot summer season.

Almost all Phoenix luxury resorts are popular winter escapes due to the lush tropical landscaping, attractive pools, and nice winter temps, and The Biltmore is no exception. This resort has a leg up due to the wonderful gardens.
The beautiful greenery creates a perfect setting for an early morning stroll or a relaxing afternoon basking in the winter sunshine from a cozy Adirondack chair. There are so many places to just stroll around and enjoy the beautiful landscaping and mountain views. All these factors combine to make this beautiful resort a true oasis in the Sonoran desert.

As many people from cold climates such as the Midwest want to escape the dreary endless winter for some relaxation in the desert sun, rates are high during this in demand season.
Benefits of a summer stay
Although a summer visit brings forth some negatives (noisy pool parties, too warm pool temps, and uncomfortable afternoon temps reaching well into the 110’s), there is one main advantage, and that is drastically reduced rates.
Once the winter crowds have disappeared, the resort offers special summer rates to entice locals who would otherwise likely not stay at the resort. The all inclusive summer special is a really great deal : the ideal staycation for locals looking to score a great deal close to home as opposed to a pricey flight somewhere with extensive time off required.
As part of the all inclusive promotion we booked , we received a daily breakfast for 2, lunch for 2, dinner for 2, complimentary self parking (a $23 value), the resort fee waived (a $45 value), and 10% off all spa services. Those who show proof of Arizona residency will also receive a $25 resort credit to be used anywhere throughout the property. This deal really is a fantastic value especially in the food dept as the lunch credit is $62 and the dinner $120! Because everything is included, a summer visit is a stress free little getaway for any local Valley residents looking for a laid-back, relaxing escape in the sun. As of 2024, the price is $355 per night (2 night minimum).

Resort amenities
One of the highlights here is a 22,000 square foot spa with a whirlpool, steam room, & dry sauna. A full service salon and fitness center are also available.

An 18 hole putting course. Glow Golf is offered on Friday nights during the summer. Unfortunately, it was way too hot during our stay to enjoy this pretty course. Too bad as I love playing mini golf. One of the downsides of living in the desert is not getting that traditional “fun summer weather.”

Lawn games are set up for anyone looking for entertainment outside of the pool scene. When you tire of sunbathing, you can enjoy some old time fun. Enjoy a life size chess board and a classic game of croquet! I love croquet and just started playing chess, so this was a nice perk although we did have to limit our time due to the heat and sun. I imagine these games would be more of a perk during the cooler winter months.

Dining options
Espresso drinks at Cup and Cone. The resort offers a small shopping area which includes a great little cafe where you can pick up a tasty espresso drink (they brew the fantastic Illy Espresso) and a few treats (try the chocolate covered strawberries or macaroons!). The Americano and Mochas here were just fantastic, plus they offer almond milk which makes the drink more creamy and decadent. They also serve homemade gelato.

Wright’s Restaurant. Wright’s is the fancier of the 2 on-site dining choices. Featuring live piano music, a menu that focuses on local produce and ingredients, and a more modern upscale setting, it’s the perfect date night choice. The Sunday Brunch is a bit pricier, although takes place in a more elegant setting with a larger variety of breakfast choices to choose amongst.
The Wright’s Bar area is elegant and quiet: the perfect place to kick back with a drink after a long day at the pool. The outdoor bar area is also very relaxing – as you sip your morning espresso, you can look out onto the beautiful gardens.
Update: The restaurant is no longer open, although the bar is still open for drinks and bar bites.

Frank & Alberts. Frank and Alberts is the more casual dining choice. Service is great here and the food is decent, although a bit overpriced for the quality & casual setting. In addition, the menu definitely could use a bit more variety. If the weather is nice, you can enjoy your meal in the beautiful lush outdoor patio.
Update: Frank and Alberts is now closed. New addition Renata’s Hearth features a lively menu of modern Latin fare.
We tried the breakfast buffet, which was decent although not quite worth the $25 price tag. Made-to-order omelets, quiche, fresh fruits, meats, assorted pastries, roasted potatoes, pancakes with prickly pear syrup, coffee, and juice were included. While it is a great value as part of the all-inclusive stay, it is not really worth the cost if paying out of pocket. In this case, Wright’s is the better option.

Lunch is pretty standard with basic salads and sandwiches comprising most of the menu. A bit more diversity could spice up the menu. I enjoyed a healthy and delicious Stone Fruit and Quinoa salad.

The dinner menu is pretty much the same as lunch with the addition of seafood, meat, and pasta based entrees. For starters, the jumbo onion rings and artichoke dip are must trys. I also really enjoyed the Fettuccine Bolognese.

The highlight of Frank & Alberts is the enticing dessert menu which includes a tempting selection of sweet treats such as the famous Tableside S’Mores, White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake, and a delicious Kahlua Cream Cake.

High Tea in the lobby. High tea on Sunday afternoons dates back over 90 years! The elegant presentation includes 5 sandwiches, 4 desserts, 2 pastries presented on a fancy 3 tiered serving tray, along with your choice amongst a long list of black, white, green, and herbal teas. It’s quite pricey at $40 per person for Summer Tea and $50 per person for the Classic High Tea, although worth it if you are looking for an elegant, relaxed weekend activity.
Update: This service has unfortunately ended.
The Pools
I would say the highlight of staying here is definitely access to the resort’s 7 pools. There’s a bit of something for everyone depending on what you are looking for. It’s so hot in the summer here that really a fabulous pool with lush landscaping is number one for me.
Paradise – This is the main hangout where 3 pools come together. A swim up bar, a 92 foot tall water slide, and summer weekend DJ pool parties and dive in movies make this the resort’s most exciting pool. It’s clean and nicely landscaped with beautiful palms and tropical plants everywhere. There’s plenty of lounger seats available with umbrella shade.

Catalina -This is the resort’s first pool, said to be Marilyn Monroe’s favorite. Also, it is where Irving Berlin drew inspiration for his classic “White Christmas” holiday song. The pool uses beautiful tiles from Southern California’s Catalina Island, hence the name.
Octatilla – This quiet saltwater pool is open exclusively to guests staying in the Ocatilla wing of the hotel.

Terrace Court – A secluded and quiet choice for those looking to escape the crowds.
Saguaro – A quiet pool choice near the Villas lodging, also featuring Catalina style tiles.
The Bougainvillea– A family-friendly pool with nice views of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve.
Saguaro Villas Pool – Relax in the Saguaro Villas courtyard.
As you can see, you have quite a few options to choose amongst. You can learn more about each on the resort’s webpage.
Premier rooms
I highly recommend choosing an upgraded room if planning your visit during the summer season. The air conditioning systems in the standard rooms are very old and will not cool the room down properly. Benefits of a Premier room include views of the gardens or pools, a larger 500-600 square foot living space (compared to 400), a larger flat screen TV, and of most benefit in the desert, a more efficient cooling system.
The bed is very comfy with a nice thick comforter. While the design isn’t overly impressive, everything is very clean, modern, and well-maintained.

Pros & cons of a summer stay
Pros
- Early and late check out with no extra fees
- Awesome package deals
- Nice variety of pools, with both relaxing and fun choices available
- Absolutely beautiful landscaping and gardens everywhere
- Service is incredible. When we switched rooms and forgot an item in the fridge, the staff immediately sent someone down to bring over our forgotten item, no question. We were also upgraded to a nicer room when our air was not working properly.
- Great on-site espresso drinks
- Lots of lovely outdoor seating for relaxing and enjoying the quiet gardens. Plenty of shade.
- Lots of fun activities conveniently located on-site. Chess, croquet, and mini golf course are an absolute blast.
- Rooms are cozy, clean, and contemporary with a simplistic design
- A beautiful bar area with a great drink menu
Cons
Pool water is too warm during the summer months. Think bath water temps with the sun also shining in your face – not very comfortable! They heat their pools to 82 degrees year-round, which means very uncomfortable temps on a hot summer afternoon.
The main Paradise Pool is too noisy and overcrowded during the summer. While you could just go over to one of the quieter pools, they just do not offer the same beautiful landscaping, and this, takes away from the resort feeling.
Frank & Alberts is just okay – I would expect higher quality for a resort of this caliber. It’s great as part of the all inclusive deal, but not really worth going out of your way for.
Air conditioning is old and outdated in the basic rooms. We upgraded to a premier room as the old air conditioning systems in the basic rooms just cannot operate efficiently enough to cool down the rooms on 100+ degree days.
No dark roast coffee for the Keurig K Cups. Also only decaf provided – you need to ask for regular which is a bit inconvenient as the lobby is a far walk.
No tubs in the bathrooms.
Self parking is a long walk (about 10 minutes in the hot desert sun) from the main resort. In my opinion, the parking should be included in the hefty resort fee, especially considering how far you have to walk.
The spa is a bit underwhelming.
Lots of walking and not a lot of signage – it was hard to find all the pools.
The entire property is beginning to show its’ age a bit although this also gives it some character.
The final verdict
Overall, The Arizona Biltmore is a nice place to spend your Phoenix winter vacation. Service is outstanding, rooms are comfortable & clean, and the pools are fabulous. However, it’s quite expensive. Thus, I recommend booking a room during the summer season when rates are more appropriate considering the amenities and overall ambiance. For locals, this is 100% the way to go.
