Lake Katherine: A Beautiful Oasis in the Chicago Suburbs
Lake Katherine is a scenic nature preserve located in Palos Heights, just a half hour or so from downtown Chicago. This beautiful recreation area includes a walking path, gardens, an arboretum, and a waterfall. Mike & I got up early one morning during our Chicago trip as we knew crowds would increase in the afternoon. We really wanted to enjoy a quiet walk, and that is what we enjoyed via our early morning visit.
The one mile trail around scenic Lake Katherine, a 20 acre man made lake, is the perfect place for taking a morning or evening walk. Kayak rentals are available at the rate of $8 per person. Take a look at a few of the pictures we took on our morning outing to Lake Katherine.

A variety of gardens are planted throughout the park, including a butterfly and herb garden.
The man made waterfall is the highlight of the park. If you are in town for St. Patrick’s Day, make sure to check it out as it is transformed into a green wonder. I haven’t ever seen it myself, but have heard from relatives that it is spectacular!
Why you should visit Lake Katherine
As you can see from the photos above, Lake Katherine is a spectacular place for photographers and other artists. Spending the morning here is a peaceful suburban escape. Whether you are seeking a beautiful place for a nature stroll, a scenic place to spend the day with your family, or a birdwatching destination, Lake Katherine is the perfect choice. Lake Katherine is a quick drive from the southwest suburbs including Orland Park, Tinley Park, and New Lenox.
