For those with a limited amount of time, head directly over to The Freedom Trail for a self guided tour of 16 of Boston's most incredible historical sites. Along the way you will pass many architectural masterpieces including Old North Church, the Massachusetts State House, and the Bunker Hill Monument.
A 2.5 mile brick lined trail will take you along the journey through Boston's historic past. This iconic trail is a wonderful way to get in a little exercise, take some great photos, and learn some interesting historical facts about a wonderful city.
Battleship Cove, located in Fall River, is home to the largest collection of naval ships. Those interested in history will enjoy the opportunity to walk aboard these historic vessels. The USS Massachusetts, the largest ship to explore, is one of 8 remaining battleships in the US. Afterwards, take a walk along the mile long boardwalk for more beautiful views of the Taunton River.
Plymouth, one of Massachusetts' most beautiful coastal towns, is home to some of the oldest sites in the US including Leyden Street, the oldest street in America. On this street you will find beautiful First Parish Church, the oldest continuously operating church in New England.
The historic church, which was built in the late 1800's, is a magnificent sight to take in. Walk over to adjacent Burial Hill, one of the oldest cemeteries, for fantastic views of the ocean.
Almost everyone can remember growing up hearing stories of the infamous New England murder case of the late 1800's in which Lizzie Borden was acquitted of the gruesome murders of both her mother and father.
Who remembers the rhyme? "Lizzie Borden took an ax and gave her mother forty whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty one."
No one was ever charged with the murders and to this day the case still remains a mystery. The Borden house now operates as a tour and bed and breakfast. Those familiar with the historic case will enjoy the informative tour and opportunity to spend the night in the supposedly haunted house.
This massive statue, which was built to honor the Mayflower Pilgrims, is 81 feet tall, making it the 3rd largest statue in the US and the largest solid granite structure in the world. 2014 marked the 125th anniversary of the elaborate statue which was completed in 1889. It took 30 years to build this architectural wonder. Be prepared to be truly amazed as the statue truly is even more impressive in person.
The Salem Witch Trials Memorials is a dedication to the 20 witches that were hung in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. As you stroll around the granite benches, you will be able to read the names of the executed.
Adjoining Old Burying Point Cemetery is a creepy, historic cemetery, which happens to be the final resting place of Judge John Hawthorne of the witch trials. The cemetery is very beautiful especially during the fall foliage season. The gorgeous look of this historic cemetery, which includes old trees surrounding old weathered gravestones, is sure to please any history & photography buffs.
The 16th stop on Boston's historic Freedom Trail is worthy of a spot of its' own on this list due to the incredible photographic opportunities. This grand 221 foot tall monument was completed in 1842 to commemorate the Battle of Bunker Hill.
Many tourists are unaware that you can climb to the top. Climbing the 294 stairs to the top is quite a workout, however, you will be rewarded with amazing views of the city.
One of the most visited parks in the US, Pilgrim Memorial, is home to 3 notable landmarks: the Mayflower replica, Plymouth Rock (commemorating the arrival of the Pilgrims in 1620), and the National Monument to Our Forefathers (the third largest US statue).

The Pilgrim Monument, which opened in Provincetown in 1910, was built to recognize the 1st landing of the Pilgrims. The 252 foot tall tower is quite an impressive sight.
It is the first site you will see as you enter this beautiful Cape Cod town. For a small fee, you can pay to climb to the top and experience extraordinary views of the harbor. If your visit happens to fall during the holidays, you will get to see the statue festively decorated for the season.
