The on site hiking trails are the best spot in the city to take in one of a kind views of the Hollywood sign. In fact, you can get up so close that you appear to be standing right beneath the sign. 8. Take a walk through Redwood National Park

This coastal park in Northern California is home to some of the tallest trees in the world (California coastal redwoods can grow to a height of over 300 feet and a width of over 20!) More than 200 hiking trails allow you to get up close and personal with these enormous historic trees.

Bicycling, horseback riding, kayaking, and camping are also available. Many of the hikes and drives also provide the opportunity for fantastic coastal views and wildlife viewing.

9. Visit Pacific Park coastal amusement park at the Santa Monica Pier

A trip to Southern California would not be complete without a stop at the historic Santa Monica Pier. Make sure to take a ride upon the iconic roller coaster, famous for its’ spectacular views of the coast. In addition to the coaster, you will find a historic Loof carousel, a small aquarium, carnival games, and a few snack shops. Did you know that the pier marks the official end of route 66? One of the best ways to experience panoramic views of the largest alpine lake in the US is by taking a ride on South Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Gondola aerial ride. The scenic 2.4 mile ride brings you up to an observation deck where you will get to take in incredible views of the lake and surrounding forests. This amazing ride should be at the top of anyone’s Tahoe to do list.

11. Plan a weekend getaway to Paso Robles

Paso Robles, located in beautiful San Luis Obispo county, is known for its’ hot springs and wineries. The gorgeous hilly landscape makes the area perfect for a summer drive. There are over 180 local wineries, most of which offer tastings. Soaking in one of the areas natural mineral springs, like River Oaks Hot Springs, is supposed to have therapeutic benefits. In addition, you will find fine dining restaurants, shopping opportunities, and seasonal events.

12. Hike at Crystal Cove State Park

This hidden gem in Orange County is one of the best places to hike; a peaceful escape away from the beach and shopping mall traffic. The natural beauty of the coastal sage scrub combined with beautiful views of the Pacific can’t be duplicated. The hilly trails (17 miles in total) provide a great full body workout. Crystal Cove truly is a great place to explore, especially along the El Moro trail. Interestingly, El Morro Canyon is reported to be home to mountain lions, with several reports over the past few years!
