Circle B Bar Reserve: A Frightening Walk Down Alligator Alley

Circle B Bar Reserve is the perfect day trip for both Tampa residents looking to escape the congestion and also Orlando tourists who are looking for a relaxing day away from the theme parks. It’s one of my favorite daytrips in central Florida. Located in Lakeland, the reserve is just an hour drive from both cities, so the perfect daytrip distance. I’ve seen a lot of gators since moving to Tampa Bay, but I really wanted to visit this preserve which is home to a trail known as “Alligator Alley.”
An alligator hotspot!
This is one of the best parks near Orlando to see alligators in their natural habitats. We saw 10+ on our first visit, and this was in January (gators are more commonly seen during the earlier spring – early summer months). Luckily, the temps were a bit higher than normal, thus plenty of gators could be seen out basking in the sun (we learned that they prefer temperatures in the lower 80’s-low 90s).
We see gators all the time, but we have never seen so many all in one place. It was an exciting experience for us and I am sure it would be even more thrilling (and scary!) for any new tourists who have never seen one in the wild.
In fact, there are so many everywhere that you will come across the following Wildlife Crossing sign.

Hiking trails
Several miles of hiking trails through diverse landscapes will give you the opportunity to get in a great workout and see plenty of wildlife. Bicycling the trails is another option, and in my opinion, a much better option on warmer days. You can cover all the trails much faster, enjoy a small breeze, and not spend as much time in the sun.
If you are not up for a hike or bike ride, you can always sign up for a 2 hour guided tram tour (due to the popularity of these rides, reservations are a must!). I would have loved a tram ride but they had nothing available on our visit. Oh well, maybe next time!

The scary walk along Alligator Alley
A walk down this alligator lined path is the must-do at this preserve. The 1.5 mile long trail is flat, easy, and mostly shaded. The problem isn’t the difficulty – it’s more watching out for gators! Alligators line both sides of the path, especially during the ideal weather conditions.
I recommend taking advantage of this free opportunity to see wildlife in their natural habitat as opposed to paying big bucks for an airboat ride. You could easily see them at a zoo, but that just isn’t as fun.
Some are very easy to spot out, while others are more hidden. Keep your eyes open! Take a look below at the many sightings we saw by looking into the tallest grasses and creeks. They tend to blend in very well with the lily pads and weeds.

A birdwatching oasis
Aside from alligators, Circle B is a prime spot for birdwatching. You will see many different species while walking the various trails. We were lucky enough to spot a bald eagle on our trip. I remember growing up in the 90’s when Bald Eagles were endangered. It was considered really rare to see one, so it’s been a treat seeing so many since moving to Florida.

I really loved photographing the birds here. We saw so many interesting species and the beautiful background setting really framed our pictures nicely. This is one of hundreds of locations you can visit along the Great Florida Birding trail.
To date, over 220 species have been sighted here, so it’s a great destination for bird lovers. Sightings are diverse and range from commonly seen Florida Sandhill Cranes, to American White Pelicans in the winter, to rare Cinnamon teal sightings.

Gopher tortoises are also commonly seen, so keep an eye out. Fortunately, they move super slow, so they are really easy to photograph! I’ve seen so many at parks all over the Bay, but I always get excited anytime I see one. Check out this adorable baby that was following the mother.

Aside from viewing wildlife, the refuge is in general a gorgeous place to walk around. It’s really nice to visit something so natural after visiting so many busy beaches and theme parks. You will come across all different types of ecosystems on the trails including: lakes, oak hammocks, marshes, and swamps.
Here are a few pretty shots we took while strolling along the trails. Personally, I can’t get enough of beautiful moss trees. I also love the wetlands scenery.

A great daytrip from Orlando & Tampa
Next time you find yourself in the Orlando or Tampa area, I 100% recommend a daytrip over to this preserve if you are looking for something nice to do in nature. The “other side of Florida” is actually quite beautiful and there are a ton of great parks and birdwatching to take advantage of while you are in the area.
If you vacationing from the north, you will want to see some wildlife and birds that you can’t see at home. As a native of Chicago, I am always excited seeing all these exotic birds, gators, armadillos, and tortoises that I never had the opportunity to see before. I am sure the novelty will wear off some day, but for now it’s still a thrilling experience.
Be sure to sign up for the tram ride well in advance as it sells out very quickly.
Safety Tips: Keep your distance!
Always keep in mind that alligators can attack at any time and the trails here are pretty narrow. Never walk too close to the edge and keep kids and pets far away from any freshwater. I have heard so many horror stories from acquaintances about pets being sadly snapped up – imagine the terror!
