GCDC is amazing grilled cheese shop in Washington D.C. It's not too often you find a cafe specializing in grilled cheese, and one that offers dietary alternatives to boot. Grilled cheese in its' new vamped up form is no longer just for kids! A great quick stop in between exploring popular D.C. museums and historical sites.
The diverse menu includes more than a dozen specialty grilled cheese sandwiches, a build your own selection, cheeseburgers, and a variety of creative mac and cheese bowls.
A few of the eclectic grilled varieties include The Cheesesteak, The Mediterranean, and The French Onion.
And of course, who can eat a grilled cheese sandwich without a delicious bowl of tomato soup? Their tomato soup is pretty tasty, although the serving size is a bit small for the price. Additional sides include chips, mac and cheese, coleslaw, and a side salad.
Anyone with a craving for some good comfort food will want to plan for a stop here. Even those dining gluten-free or vegan do not need to feel left out as they offer GF bread and dairy-free cheese.
Service was really slow. This place was packed and the staff seemed to have a difficult time dealing with the traffic. We had to wait almost 15 minutes just for a seat to open up.
The vibe is casual and hip. This is a great laid-back choice where you can kick back and relax, while indulging in some comfort food and drinks after a long day exploring the Capitol Hill region.
I recommend checking out GCDC after taking your pics of the White House. It is conveniently located just a few blocks away. After so much walking around the city, a comforting grilled cheese and tomato soup combo really makes for the most satisfying dish. This hefty sandwich and savory soup was the perfect fuel after a long walk to see the iconic White House.
