Austin is a vegan mecca, a city that consistently ranks as one of the most vegetarian friendly destinations in the country. Any vegan visitor will find an abundance of tasty options to choose amongst as there is no shortage of vegetarian and vegan friendly establishments. Counter Culture is one of your best bets for delicious home-cooked vegan comfort food. The extensive menu features vegan (as well as many gluten-free & soy free) variations of your favorite satisfying dishes.

Counter Culture offers one of the best vegan menus in town. On the weekend brunch menu, you will find veganized versions of favorites like French Toast, breakfast burritos, and omelets. Lunch and dinner menus feature vegan appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and comfort dishes like pizza, mac and cheese, and pad Thai. Both raw and cooked foods are available, which is nice as many vegan establishments tend to lean one way or the other. The delicious appetizers are the highlight of the menu. At Counter Culture, a couple can easily split 3 or 4 appetizers to form a delicious, filling, and fun meal. This is a great restaurant to visit for drinks and appetizers because they have so many more unique options in this category than other vegan restaurants. The Spicy Artichoke Dip served with toasted bread (GF available) is simply fantastic: creamy and almost identical in taste to the dairy version. The East Side Nachos (tortilla chips, homemade queso, avocado, tomatoes, and jalapenos) is another must try. In addition, the Caesar Salad featuring a creamy nutty dressing and GF croutons stacks up very well in comparison to its' gluten and dairy loaded version. As this dish is always off limits, it is definitely worth a try. Everything on the menu is surprisingly moderately priced and serving sizes are rather large. Counter Culture uses as much organic and local produce as possible, so their ability to keep prices so low is really impressive. Menu items are marked as to whether or not they contain gluten or soy, which is very helpful for those with food intolerances and allergies. Most of the menu can be made gluten-free, and is conveniently marked as to whether a GF version is available.

Staff is helpful with any questions you may have concerning the menu or specific ingredients. They are very patient and do not rush you whatsoever to order or leave the restaurant. Any substitutions you wish to make are gladly accepted.

The dining room is really unique with a bold blue color pattern and unique art. On nice days, you can sit outside and enjoy the lovely patio. Sitting out on the patio on a mild summer day is a nice experience as it is quiet, shady, and relaxing.

Counter Culture is one of the best choices in Austin for vegans and gluten-free diners. The abundant menu of creative dishes, affordable prices, cozy outdoor seating, and laid-back atmosphere easily make it one of the top picks for the casual vegan or gluten-free diner.
