Bird Rock is the premier roaster in San Diego, with 3 locations including one in the upscale La Jolla neighborhood. The company has won many awards over the years including the 2016 Good Food Awards. As Bird Rock is a seasonal roaster, you can expect every cup to be fresh. In addition, coffee is roasted 5 days a week to ensure maximum freshness. The quaint La Jolla location is a great choice before your beach activities, as it is conveniently located just a short ways away from both Pacific Beach and the gorgeous beaches of La Jolla. Basically everything you want in a great coffeehouse experience can be found at Bird Rock: quality drinks prepared by dedicated staff, fantastic service, a unique setting, and early morning hours (opens at 6am during the week, 6:30am on weekends).

Bird Rock offers organic and fair trade coffee, and uses organic milk for espresso drinks. Almond milk can be substituted. The menu includes basic espresso drinks, tea and tea lattes, hot chocolate, and iced drinks. Coffee is roasted on-site in small batches. In addition, Bird Rock is known for their pour-over bar, one of the first in San Diego. We tested out the Americano and the Mocha (with almond milk). Both were so smooth and flavorful, and we definitely would have relaxed with another, had we more time. The drinks were a perfect relaxed wake up for us before exploring beautiful La Jolla Cove and Torrey Pines State Nature Reserve. One popular drink to test out is the "Trophy Wife Latte," a creamy macadamia nut based drink. Another interesting choice is the "Sugar Daddy," a Mexican mocha drink. The prices were pretty cheap compared to other coffee shops I have tried out in the Southwest, especially for a place that uses organic, fresh ingredients.

The baristas were so friendly and even added almond milk for no extra charge when we forgot to initially request it as a substitution. The baristas seem to take pride in their job and did not seem bored/irritated as is the usual attitude of many coffee shop employees today.

The setting at Bird Rock is quiet and quaint. It's a great place to people watch on La Jolla Blvd. Whether sitting outside on the bench or inside gazing out at the huge windows, it's a fun & relaxing place to take a little break. There are lots of cute shops and restaurants within walking distance. The casual, airy, beachy setting creates the perfect tone for any beach/nature activities you will enjoy after your visit.

Rather than simply grabbing a cup of coffee to-go from a chain, why not try out a fantastic local roaster like Bird Rock? It's always nice to take some time out to enjoy the simple pleasures in life like a great cup of coffee. At Bird Rock, you will find that the quality of the drinks, service, and laid-back local setting far surpass any experience you would have at a standard chain.
