Krakatoa is a unique coffeehouse known for its' beautiful outdoor patio, laid-back atmosphere, and tasty drinks. We stopped by for an espresso drink on our way to the San Diego Zoo, a convenient 5 min drive away. We were impressed with the quality of the espresso drinks, as well as the relaxing setting. You will not find another coffeehouse in the area with such a mellow setting. Krakatoa is the ideal coffeehouse choice for those wanting to lounge around for a bit in a quiet setting, as opposed to simply ordering a coffee to-go. Wake up with a delicious espresso drink at Krakatoa before exploring all the wonderful attractions & natural beauty that San Diego is so famous for: it's the perfect way to start your day in this beautiful city.

Krakatoa keeps it local which is always a good thing. Both their espresso beans and house coffee are by local roaster Caffe Calabria. Drinks were excellent; we tried the Mocha and the Americano, both of which were smooth, tasty, and appropriately priced. We appreciated the automatic use of mugs, as many coffee shops today assume you want a paper cup to-go. The Krakhead (Espresso and House Coffee) is a nice strong choice if you need a little extra boost to start your day. Aside from the standards like cappuccinos and lattes, you will find quite an interesting selection of specialty drinks on the menu. The Orange Blossom Latte is an espresso drink brewed with orange peel over ice with milk and jasmine. Another unique choice is the Swedish Winter Coffee, a combination of espresso, honey, steamed milk, and a Scandinavian spice blend (cardamom, nutmeg, all spice, and cinnamon). If you are looking for a refreshing cool drink after spending the day at the beach, then one of Krakatoa's tasty frosted drinks may be in order. A number of treats such as muffins, cookies, and quiche are available. At least one vegan special is offered each day; on the weekends, they even offer vegan donuts! In addition, a few simple entrees such as bagels, sandwiches, salads, and smoothies are available on a daily basis. Happy Hour runs from 3-6pm daily, and includes $1 off sandwiches, and $3 beer, wine, and mimosas.

Service was pretty standard and drinks were made quickly.

Krakatoa is a great choice for anyone looking for a non-rushed, non-chain coffeehouse experience. Here you can linger outside and soak up the Southern California sunshine as you sip your drink. Who doesn't want to take advantage of San Diego's beautiful year-round ideal weather? The decor inside is unique, although sitting outside on the quiet landscaped deck, featuring lots of tress and plenty of shade, is the highlight of visiting Krakatoa. It almost feels like a mini tropical oasis in the middle of the city.

Overall, Krakatoa is a wonderful choice to start your vacation or morning out in San Diego. It's a relaxing & delicious treat before heading into the city, not to mention conveniently located on the way to many of the city's best attractions.
