Long Beach often gets lost in the mix of Los Angeles and Orange County. The city is conveniently located in-between both areas, yet offers plenty of desirable amenities of its own.

Long Beach is a great destination for fitness, dining, and waterfront recreation. In addition, there is an endless lineup of exciting events that take place throughout the year.

1. Take a bike ride along the waterfront

The Long Beach Shoreline Pedestrian path is an easy, fast, flat, scenic 3.1 mile ride. I love running or biking and feeling like I got in a nice little workout while still taking in fantastic views of the Pacific. This path is great for beginners or those looking for a quick workout because the distance isn’t intimidating.

2. Visit the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden

This peaceful garden is located on the campus of California State University but is open to the public as well. My favorite feature was the koi pond. You can feed the fish and they will follow you all around the garden. The garden is manicured and up kept providing an appealing aesthetic experience. This quiet oasis is a perfect place to enjoy a scenic break away from the beach crowds!

3. Take a walk around Shoreline Village

Home to the Aquarium of the Pacific, waterfront restaurants, Spirit Cruises, shopping and more, you have endless opportunities for an entire day of beachside fun! There are many fun theme restaurants with patios facing the water. Events are always on the lineup year-round. The souvenir shops carry nice Long Beach/California apparel and knick knacks. Overall, it's the best place in Long Beach for shopping, dining, and entertainment.

4. Run the Long Beach International Half Marathon

Running the Long Beach Half Marathon (held annually in October) was an amazing experience, by far the best half marathon I have come across. There are plenty of spectators cheering you on, gorgeous views of the ocean throughout the entire course, and a fun finish line party. After your race, there are plenty of sandy beaches, fun restaurants, and relaxing cruises to enjoy!

5. Visit Naples Island

Naples Island is a beautiful section of Long Beach, home to amazing million dollar houses and fantastic waterfront views. During the Christmas months, houses are lavishly decorated. Be sure to check out the annual holiday boat parade if you happen to be in town!

6. Dine at a waterfront restaurant

Long Beach is home to many waterfront restaurants. Most restaurants in the area offer outdoor seating; this is a great way to take advantage of the beautiful weather! My favorites are Yard House and Tequila Jacks. Both offer outdoor decks featuring fabulous water views. Even in common chains like PF Changs and Chilis are much better when you factor in the lively location!

7. Shop/eat/play on Pine Avenue

This section of downtown is home to many shops, restaurants, bars, a theater, a dueling piano bar, and more. There is even a Ferris Wheel – it only costs $6 and you are rewarded with panoramic views of the city, coast, and the beautiful Queen Mary!

8. Visit the Long Beach Museum of Art

This coastal museum is small, yet still houses a decent collection, with the big bonus being the grand waterfront views. The highlight here is a wonderful local restaurants which offers chef driven meals and a beautiful patio area overlooking the waterfront.

9. Attend a CSULB basketball game

10. Take in the views from the top of the Lions’ Lighthouse

Walk or bike up to this Shoreline Village Lighthouse at night – the views of the city are absolutely amazing! As an extra perk you will get in a great workout trekking up the hill!
