For creative vegetarian fare in the Asheville area, look no further than the Laughing Seed Cafe. This eclectic cafe offers creative vegetarian fare which goes way beyond simple salads and sandwich plates. No where else in Asheville will you find such an extensive menu derived (almost) solely from plant based ingredients.
The Laughing Seed menu is loaded to the brim with appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and entrees which are 100% vegetarian (most items are vegan or able to be made vegan). Lots of comforting favorites here like Grilled Cheese, Mac and Cheese, and Enchiladas. It's nice to see a veggie place recreate classic entrees instead of simply offering boring basic salads or worse strange sounding entrees no one has ever heard of.
The French Onion soup is pretty delicious, and probably the only place in town where you can find a veggie based broth used as the base. Be sure to look into the daily specials. On one occasion, we were treated to a delicious Indian dish.
The Farmers Pie is a unique veggie twist on the classic Shepherd's Pie - savory and fulfilling - the perfect treat on a cold winter's day. They even offer a veg version of Crab Cakes and Grits, using jackfruit crab cakes. Plenty of interesting selections here to test out.
Laughing Seed also serves weekend brunch. Sundays, you can look forward to Sweet Potato Pancakes, Huevos Rancheros, and a stuffed to the brim Breakfast Burrito, and numerous other vegetarian, meat-free choices. Lots of great choices here for the vegetarian, unlike most breakfast places where you have to customize every plate!
On a side note, many entrees are able to made gluten-free!
Service was just average - not really overly friendly, yet still efficient.
The Laughing Seed is a pretty spacious place compared to most tiny veg places. The decor is nice and the ambiance very inviting.
If you are seeking quality vegetarian fare that is anything but boring, definitely give Laughing Seed a chance. Here you have the option of going with an American classic like Mac and Cheese (veganized of course), or enjoying an international specialty like Thai Green Curry.
