The Grill is a picturesque restaurant located inside the historic Hacienda del Sol, a Tucson resort known for its' beautiful architecture and desert botanical gardens. Although the setting at The Grill truly is spectacular, the breakfast experience was a bit of a let down, due to a combination of poor service, bitter coffee, and a rather boring menu.
The Grill is one of those places you go to simply because the views are great. Sometimes, you get lucky and the food is great too. Unfortunately, The Grill is one of those touristy restaurants which is only worth visiting for the grand views. First, off the menu is rather uninteresting for an upscale restaurant with nothing more than your standard breakfast fare. I was hoping for a crepe or quiche, however, we were left with only the basic choices like omelets.
The omelet and 2 egg basic breakfast plates we tried were both good, although the presentation was a bit casual for the price point. Also, the coffee was completely bitter, so bad in fact that we had to exchange the espresso drinks for a regular coffee, which was not much better. For 4 bucks a cup, the Grill really should a bit more effort into their coffee preparation and perhaps hire a trained barista.
Service was pretty unattentive, not exactly what you expect out of a 4 star resort, and probably amongst the worst we have experienced in Arizona. The staff generally seemed uninterested and did not return at all to check back on us after taking our order. Our coffee was never refilled and plates never cleared. No one ever asked if we enjoyed our meals. Generally, employees seem a bit happier and more tourist oriented at resorts, however, our waitress did not engage in any small talk, nor did she seem happy to be working at The Grill.
Despite the poor coffee and mediocre service, we really enjoyed the views. The Grill has floor-to-ceiling windows which overlook the beautiful Sonoran desert and surrounding Catalina mountains. I recommend making a reservation for a window seat as they tend to fill up fast, even on the weekdays. From your seat, you can enjoy all the beautiful desert plants like the unique Saguaro, only found in Arizona. The Grill really is a relaxing peaceful place to enjoy breakfast, now if only the service and food could be taken up a knotch!
The Grill is a decent enough choice if you are staying at the resort. The food is decent, the views are spectacular, and most of all, it's conveniently located right on site so you do not have to put up with the horrendous Tucson traffic along Oracle rd. However, for those not staying at the resort, there are plenty of better breakfast options around Tucson. Check out Maynards downtown or Seis Mexican at Mercado San Agustin for starters.
