Not surprisingly, the suburban Phoenix region is loaded with endless locations of every single common coffee chain you could possibly think of. If you are looking for a great local shop to take away some of the repetitive suburban boredom, you are in luck as there are numerous hidden local gems like Solo Cafe to check out.
The espresso drinks at Solo were pretty tasty I have to say. It is one of the better non-chain options in the Tempe area to enjoy a properly brewed espresso drink. The menu at Solo includes all your basic espresso specialty drinks, plus special lattes and a large selection of loose leaf teas to choose amongst if you are not a coffee fan. Several specialty mochas are available - I recommend trying out the White Mocha which was really smooth and flavorful.
Service at Solo was great. The barista was friendly and seemed to have plenty of experience brewing all different types of espresso drinks.
Solo Cafe has a bit of an odd set up as it is located in the same space as a hair salon. The seating area is pretty much non existent and limited to only about 3-4 seats. Hopefully, they can expand the space in the future. What little decor existed was eclectic and interesting to look at while enjoying the fantastic drinks. Hopefully in the future, they relocated into their own building, as the drinks are actually quite good.
Right now a trip to Solo Cafe is not a particularly memorable experience due to the limited space and lack of decor, however, it has the potential to be a great coffeehouse once they expand.
Solo Cafe is a decent choice for a coffee break if you happen to be in the Tempe area. I would not necessarily go out of my way to visit as there are plenty of other decent independent coffee shops all over the Phoenix metro areas - you just have to look beyond the common chains populating every street!
