Oregano's is a regional Italian chain with numerous locations throughout the Phoenix metro area, two in Tucson, and one in Flagstaff. With a shortage of quality Italian restaurants (or really any for that matter) in the Northern Arizona region, the Flagstaff location comes in as a nice casual Italian dining choice. Decent food, great service, and a creative menu would bring me back to Oregano's for some tasty comfort food.
Oregano's offers an interesting mix of classic Italian dishes, along with a few creative, modern specialties. The family is originally from Chicago and specializes in Chicago style Italian favorites. One of the highlights here is the Chicago style pizza, available in both thin crust and deep dish. Each pizza is made fresh in a hearthstone oven, using real Wisconsin cheese, homemade marinara, and fresh toppings.
The menu at Oregano's is pretty large with a little something for everyone. The spinach artichoke dip and Guaca-Tony (a huge thin pizza crust sprinkled with Parmesan and then topped with a big dollop of guacamole) are 2 great choices in terms of starters.
However, the treats do not stop with these 2 tasty apps. You will find a large assortment of tasty fried treats including Toasted Ravioli, Stuffed Mushrooms, Fried Zucchini, and delicious homemade garlic bread.
Pasta choices range from classics like Lasagna and Chicken Parmesan to creative selections like Artichoke Lasagna and Alfredo the Dark, a Southwest style Alfredo cream sauce with poblano peppers.
The Original Bollo pasta, an unlimited serving of angel hair pasta topped with homemade marinara sauce, is one of the most basic, yet satisfying dishes. And at just 7 bucks, you can't really beat this deal anywhere else in town.
On the downside, the food is a bit on the salty side, so you will definitely need to drink up extra water especially in this dry climate. If they could tone down the salt use a bit, the food would be even better.
And if you are still hungry after seeing the ginormous serving sizes (don't order too much - you will have leftovers), you can treat yourself to The Original Pizza Cookie, a half pound chocolate chip cookie cake topped with vanilla ice cream, and definitely large enough to be split amongst 2 or more.
If you are looking to eat a bit lighter and healthier, try one of Oregano's many salad combinations. These are no wimpy salads, but rather enormous plates loaded with all sorts of fresh ingredients, making for a filling meal on their own.
Lunch specials are offered Monday-Friday from 11am-3pm and include a handful of pizza and pasta specialties priced under 8 bucks. It's one of the best deals in the Flagstaff region.
Service is exceptional at Oregano's, with the waiters being much friendlier and peppier than pretty much anywhere else in town.
The inside of Oregano's is quite nice with attractive decor and classic Italian music like Frank Sinatra playing in the background. It feels a bit out of place for Flagstaff (nice big dining room, friendly service, affordable pricing), which is a good thing.
The dining area is very spacious and clean and they even have a pretty outdoor patio for enjoying Flagstaff's nice summer season. Oregano's is located on a quiet side street, and thus, it's much easier to find parking here than driving around in circles downtown.
Oregano's is a nice casual Italian restaurant if you are looking for fun comfort food to enjoy in a cozy setting. Not the healthiest food around, but a great choice if you feel like treating yourself to some rich & tasty Italian food.
