On our road trip, which took us through Yuma, we decided to check out The Garden Cafe as opposed to a standard chain. The relaxed outdoor patio and friendly service made it a decent choice for a non-rushed lunch break before getting back on the road again.
We ordered the garden vegetable quiche and the turkey burger. While the meals did fill us up for our drive, they were just average in taste. The quiche definitely tasted homemade, however, it was a bit too heavy on the cheese for my taste. Also, I would have preferred toast and breakfast potatoes as opposed to the fruit bread. We also thought it was a bit pricey (over 11 bucks) for a cafe in a small city in the middle of nowhere.
The Garden Cafe serves breakfast and lunch. On the menu you will find standard entrees such as pancakes, burritos, scrambles, and sandwiches for breakfast, and sandwiches, burritos, homemade soup, and salads for lunch.
The Garden Potato with the Works (red potatoes topped with cheese, sour cream, bacon, green onions, and jalapenos, served with a homemade muffin) sounds like it would have been a better choice than the quiche had we arrived just a bit earlier for breakfast).
Service was very friendly, although a bit slow. As we were in no way in a hurry, we did not mind, however, if time is an issue you should probably look elsewhere. On the bright side, our waitress seemed to keep it together despite the fact that she was serving a packed house alone.
The highlight of dining at The Garden Cafe is the gorgeously landscaped patio. It's definitely a casual experience (plastic chairs and table covers), however a very relaxing setting with plenty of shade and even a few bird cages to gaze at while you dine. Despite the surrounding desert landscapes, the patio area at Garden Cafe makes you feels as if you have escaped to a mini tropical oasis for a bit.
If you ever find yourself driving through Yuma (and have a bit of time to waste), you may want to check out this cute little cafe as opposed to a bland everyday chain. After hours of driving through the dry desert, the tropical inspired patio really does provide a refreshing break.
