WHyld Ass is hands down the best vegan and gluten-free restaurant choice in town. The menu, service, and setting all resemble a big city vegan restaurant rather than one you would find in a small town like Flagstaff.

Luckily for Flagstaff vegan diners, WHyld Ass recently decided to relocate here from their old Bisbee location. What a wonderful treat for area vegans and a sure disappointment for Bisbee vegans!

Food

The menu at WHyld Ass is very creative with vegan/gluten-free options not typically seen such as Quiche, Stuffed French Toast, Mac and Cheese, Southwest Burritos, and even Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza.

Everything is vegan and most items have a gluten-free option. The 100% plant based menu offers many veganized varieties of traditionally off limit dishes, which is a nice departure from vegan restaurants which only serve basic salads and sandwiches that you can easily make yourself at home.

As an added bonus no soy is used in the kitchen. In addition, organic produce is used and GMOs are not used.

Hands down, the smoky/slightly spicy cashew based Macaroni and Cheese (gluten-free with Quinoa/corn based noodles) is the best item on the menu - it's truly addicting!

The Deep Dish Pizza is another fantastic choice. I've never seen a vegan restaurant offer anything close to deep dish pizza, so this was a nice surprise. The grilled cheese and tomato soup is another decent choice.

On one disappointing note, the raw lasagna we tried was not all that good, and very overpriced. Aside from this, everything else we tried has been fantastic.

Other interesting menu items include WHyld Lumber Jacks (GF buckwheat pancakes topped with coconut carob sauce, bananas and shredded coconut), Breakfast Quinoa Porridge (Quinoa stewed in blackstrap molasses with coconut milk and ginger and topped with chia, flaxseeds, cinnamon and coconut), and an Oaxacan Jackfruit Quesadilla (Oaxacan jackfruit mixed with tumeric sour cream, sunflower cheese, and salsa).

The desserts at WHyld Ass are amongst the best in town. They offer a selection of baked goodies and raw treats daily. The raw cheesecake and cupcakes are especially delicious. For those dining gluten-free, they usually have a decent selection available daily.

What's great about WHyld Ass is that you don't have to settle for a basic meal as there are so many interesting selections both for breakfast and lunch. Also great is the fact that the entire menu is not raw as opposed to many vegan restaurants.

While there are several raw choices, you also get to choose between some hot comfort foods. Too many vegan restaurants assume that all vegans eat raw, which in my opinion doesn't make for a fun meal out. Just because you are vegan doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice getting a treat ever once in a while. Visiting WHyld ass allows you to enjoy a real restaurant experience.

Green chlorophyll water is available for free for all guests. Chlorophyll contains beneficial enzymes and nutrients which help with food digestion. Be sure to grab a glass with your meal for an extra healthy boost!

Coffee, a variety of loose leaf teas, smoothies, juiced drinks, lemonades, and homemade kombucha are also available. The Japanese Extracted Pour Over coffee is a great alternative to traditional drip coffee - the flavor is much smoother and less bitter.

As you can see, you can have a full restaurant experience here. Appetizers, entrees, desserts, and even drinks are available. Any vegans/vegetarians/and gluten-free diners living in or visiting Flagstaff should definitely give WHyld Ass a chance.

Service

Service is extremely friendly. The owner is always around ensuring that you enjoy your meal. Everyone is beyond friendly and helpful to those new to the vegan diet. The staff has no problems explaining ingredients and/or recommending meals.

Atmosphere

The setting is casual and eclectic with a unique garden like design scheme. A Koi pond, plants, and art create a nice tranquil setting.

Final Remarks

WHyld Ass would be one of my top picks in terms of Northern Arizona vegan restaurants. The menu is creative, the food is fantastic, the dining area is peaceful, and service is friendly. What more could you ask for in a vegan dining experience?
