Although thin crust NY style pizza and thick Chicago deep dish tend to get all the attention, Detroit style pizza also holds its' own. This delicious style of pizza is typically about an inch thick, cut in squares, and features a crispy crust and a chewy interior, and sauce on the top.
If you are looking to try something new, Pi-Squared Pizza, with locations in Arden and Hendersonville, is a real treat for anyone who is up for trying Detroit style pizza. It is one of the few places in the Asheville metro where you can order Detroit style pizza.
Pi-Squared features a menu of specialty Detroit style pizzas. This was actually my first time ever trying this style of pizza, and I have to say I was impressed.
A few of the signature Pis include: Chicken Pesto, Veggie, Greektown, and Buffalo Chicken. In addition, you can customize your own. Although the pizza is quite delicious, it comes at quite a high price tag.
Four slices is $15, while 8 is a whopping $30. However, the pizza is quite thick and extremely filling. A piece or 2 is plenty for the average eater. A bit overpriced for a small town, if you ask me. However, if you are up for a splurge it's something delicious and different!
Sides include salads, wings, and the most delicious cheesy bread served with marinara. Additionally calzones and subs are also available. If you have room leftover (I highly doubt it - Detroit style is so filling!) treat yourself to a custard with toppings of your choice. Oreo sundae and Cherry and Blueberry Cheesecake available.
This is a counter service establishment, so not much service is involved. The little service provided is friendly and upbeat. The food does not take long even on busy weekend nights. The staff is always smiling and seem happy to be there.
The ambiance at Pi is very pleasant. Faux brick walls and Detroit based art give the space a unique and fun Midwest-style urban retro vibe.
Pi-Squared is a winner for anyone who loves Detroit style pizza. There are not many options in the WNC region, and fortunately, the pizza here is pretty delicious. They offer lots of interesting combinations to please everyone, even vegetarians. Be prepared for a high price tag and you will not be dissapointed. On the bright side, the pizza is very filling and you will definitely have leftovers!
