Review Details

The Original Rainbow Cone is an iconic ice cream shop which has been around for almost 100 years in the Chicagoland area. There are several locations including Navy Pier, downtown, suburban Darien, and historic Beverly. As a Chicago native, I have been enjoying this delicious ice cream for over 30 years. While I no longer live in the city, I always treat myself to a wonderful 5 sliced cone anytime I return home for a summer visit. Nothing really tops an amazing ice cream cone on a hot and humid Chicago summer afternoon!

Food

The Original Rainbow Cone is comprised of 5 different flavors including: chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (NY vanilla with cherries and walnuts), Pistachio, and orange sherbet. They are known for slicing their ice cream instead of scooping it which sets them apart from others. I love all the flavors especially the Palmer House. Prices are pretty reasonable. In additional to cones, there are banana splits, sundaes, additional ice cream feature flavors, and cakes available.

If you plan on going to the Taste of Chicago you can stop by their booth and pick up a cone. Additionally, the iconic ice cream is often found at fairs, 5k races, and other festivals throughout the Chicagoland region. I love visiting the original Western Ave location, because it is nostalgic for me and I love the fun colorful pink building.

Service

There may be a long line on busy summer afternoons: trust me, it's worth the wait!

Atmosphere

Western Avenue is home to the original historic pink building. There is nowhere to sit inside, but they do offer a covered patio. Even the picnic tables have a rainbow touch and there are some fun murals to enjoy.

Final Words

The Original Rainbow Cone in Chicago is a great treat during the summer months. The combination of the 5 different ice cream flavors is even tastier than you can imagine. Whether you are in the suburbs or downtown, make room for a Chicago's best treat this summer season.
