Update: This location has closed. As of 2025, there are 3 locations: Boston South End (655 Tremont St.), Fenway (140 Brookline Ave.), and Quincy Market. FoMu is an excellent local alternative ice cream shop for those intolerant or allergic to dairy. This unique shop has 2 Boston locations, one in Allston and one in Jamaica Plain. The creamy, delicious coconut based, non-dairy ice cream is sure to please everyone. As someone who avoids dairy based ice cream, I really loved the flavor and texture: honestly, I could tell no difference.

Food

FoMu offers a large selection (about 15 tempting choices) of coconut based flavors, ranging from cookie dough to avocado. They even had a limited edition girl scout cookie flavor on the menu! Smoothies, frappes, ice cream cakes, cookie sandwiches, coffee, and tea are also available.

Because the ice cream starts with a coconut base, it is accessible to almost everyone, except for the rare few with a coconut allergy. Most of the flavors are also gluten-free, and those which are not, are clearly marked. Natural sprinkles and toppings are available, although the ice cream is so creamy and delicious you won't need it. The chocolate is absolutely amazing: it might even be better than traditional dairy based ice cream! Signature flavors include: Black Raspberry Chunk, Chocolate Cookie Dough, Cold Brew, and Birthday Cake.

Service

Service was great. The staff was friendly and approachable. The cafe was not at all busy, so we were able to take our time choosing a flavor.

Atmosphere

There is plenty of seating available and the local artwork adds a pleasant vibe for a relaxing sweet treat break.

Final Words

FoMu is an excellent choice for vegans, lactose-intolerant individuals, and anyone else who prefers not to indulge in dairy. A healthy alternative located just a short drive from Boston, FoMu is a great choice for an after lunch or dinner snack (Allston is home to several other healthy vegetarian cafes). Treat yourself to something different at FoMu. If you have never tried coconut ice cream, you are in for a surprisingly creamy treat!
