Al Mac's Diner is a historic stainless steel diner in Fall River, Massachusetts. The restaurant recently reopened with new owners after being shut down for 8 months. Mike and I decided to stop in one night to check out the menu. While the 50's style ambiance is quite attractive, the menu and food could be improved a bit. However, if you are looking for a cheap meal or a quick bite to eat late at night, then Al Mac's will probably fit the bill.
Al Mac's serves your typical American comfort foods. Breakfast is the most popular time to visit as they offer omelets, pancakes, Stuffed French Toast, and Belgian Waffles. HIghlights include: Nutella Waffles, Sweet Bread French Toast, and a create-your-own omelet option. The menu was much smaller than I expected for a diner and also more expensive. Usually diner breakfast food is pretty cheap and you receive very large serving sizes.
I ordered 2 eggs, potatoes and toast and my portion was tiny! Unfortunately, the scrambled eggs were not scrambled and came out looking like a hamburger patty, which changes the texture and taste of the eggs. Mike ordered an open faced turkey sandwich. He was a bit displeased as it was lacking gravy, and instead covered in sugary cranberries.
On the bright side, pricing is definitely on the cheap side and there are numerous classic comfort foods to choose amongst.
Service was not good. The waitress was extremely slow and not friendly in the slightest. She never came back over to check on us. had to wait almost 20 minutes just to get a straw for my drink since she forgot to initially bring one over.
Al Mac's is housed in a historic building which was built in 1953; it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. This diner has a nice old-time charm with 50's music playing in the background and fun retro decor. The space is nicely decorated, although a bit too small and cramped when busy.
Al Mac's Diner is an okay place to check out if you need a quick late night snack and nothing else is open. The food is nothing to write home about, although the old-fashioned atmosphere is quite attractive, and unfortunately, something we no longer find much these days. It will likely be a fun throwback to the past by anyone who grew up eating at diners.
