Hollywood sign in Los Angeles

The Walk of Fame is the famous 15 block section of Hollywood Blvd dedicated to stars of today and yesteryear. The Walk of Fame is one of those touristy attractions that you have to visit just once to see what all the commotion is about. After one trip, you surely will not want to deal with the noise and traffic ever again. Honestly, there are many better attractions in the L.A. area, and Hollywood is overall quite overrated.

If you only have time for 1 thing in the L.A. area, I recommend hiking in the Santa Monica mountains or visiting the Griffith Observatory, both of which offer amazing views of the region. Nevertheless, the Walk of Fame is fun to explore, if anything just to check another item off your bucket list!

2500+ “Stars” on display

Steven Spielberg star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

More than 2500 stars line 1.3 miles of Hollywood Blvd. at the iconic Walk of Fame with new stars added yearly. The pink terrazzo star is familiar to most of us due to its’ presence in various media. Various actors, musicians & others in the entertainment industry have earned their place among the famous walk.

Nominations are turned in throughout the year. A committee meets during the summer to determine which celebrities will receive stars. The public is invited to attend the Walk of Fame star ceremonies. Visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame website for information regarding upcoming celebrity ceremonies.

This is just a handful of the stars you will find at the Walk of Fame. You can browse around for hours looking for all your favorites. I advise going on a weekday morning in order to avoid the insane weekend crowds. It is easier to get pictures by your favorites without hoards of people around. This is by far one of the most congested sites in the city, so be aware that you were warned in advance!

Grauman’s Chinese Theater

Grauman’s Chinese Theater, located in the same area, is a bit more interesting than the Walk of Fame. This gorgeous historic theater opened back in 1926 and still screens film to this day. On an interesting note, it was the first theater to have air conditioning! In front of the theater, you will find the famous celebrity hand, footprints, and autographs. Everyone has a fun time trying to match up their prints with their favorite celebrities. If anything this is a bit more interesting than the stars on the Walk of Fame as your favorite performers actually had molds taken of their hands and feet in the concrete.

Movie premieres

Watching celebrities walk down the red carpet for movie premieres is a fun, free fan activity. Check the Walk of Fame calendar for information on upcoming celebrity events. We were able to catch one premiere back when we lived in L.A. However, one time was plenty enough for us as it was way too crowded! The “Green Lantern” red carpet premiere was a fun event filled with several A-list celebrities, such as Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Tim Robbins, and more!

Hollywood & Highland Center (now Ovation) is a nice shopping, dining & entertainment complex. On the second floor, you are treated to amazing views of the Hollywood sign. Parking is only $2 with restaurant validation! Hard Rock Cafe is a fun place to grab a bite, listen to some great rock music, and enjoy the rock themed atmosphere & memorabilia. Plus, the comfort food is just perfect for anyone on vacation – try the appetizer platter and the twisted mac and cheese!

Other Hollywood Blvd. attractions include The Hollywood Wax Museum, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, the El Capitan Theater, and various trolley tours, including Starline Tours. Most of these are not my cup of tea, although the historic El Capital theater is supposed to be beautiful. Plus, they screen all Disney movies past and present, so if you are a fan of everything Disney, you may want to check it out!
