Il Pizzaiolo is a decent upscale Italian dining choice in the beautiful Mt. Lebanon neighborhood in Pittsburgh. In 1996, this restaurant opened as Pittsburgh's first Neapolitan pizzeria. Today, tourists and locals alike continue to enjoy fresh pizza and pasta made on-site.
All the ingredients used here are top notch, which is always a plus. Pasta is cooked al dente. Fresh mozzarella is made in house and San Marzano D.O.P. Tomatoes and Mozzarella di Bufala come direct from italy.
Pasta entrees include choices like Spaghetti Pomodoro, Ravioli Caprese, and Gnocchi Sorrentina. Pizza options include Marinara, Margherita, New York, and Calzone. One decent choice is the Quattro Formaggi featuring 4 cheeses (Mozzarella, Asiago, Fontina, Gorgonzola, and Parmigiano). The pizza is good, although quite pricey for the small size (ranging from $20-24 for a small pizza).
If you are up for dessert, the pastries are quite delicious. They use real vanilla, cage free eggs, and imported Italian flour just like you would find in a pastry shop in Italy. Treat yourself to the Cannoli or Tiramisu.
Service was just okay, not very attentive despite the slow afternoon crowds.
The interior is clean and modern, although a bit on the bland side decor wise. They do offer a nice patio dining area which you can use during the 'Burgh's milder spring and summer season. Unfortunately, it was too cold on our visit. I would like to come back for an afternoon lunch date: the setting looks fantastic.
Il Pizzaiolo is a decent choice for lunch if you happen to be visiting Mt. Lebanon for the day. There are a number of great local coffeeshops within walking distance to enjoy before or after your meal.
