Mediterraneo Caffe was our chosen Italian restaurant in Providence after a night of ice skating at the seasonal rink in Kennedy Plaza. Located in Federal Hill amongst many other Italian restaurants, this spot drew us in with the bright colors and contemporary look.

Food

I was surprised at the high prices of basic pasta on the menu. A plate of Fettuccine Alfredo was $19(charged an extra dollar for whole grain noodles. My boyfriend ordered Gnocchi Alla Sorrentina, which he said was a delicious combination of potato dumplings in a tomato basil sauce.

At almost $20, I would expect the pasta dishes to come with a bowl of soup or salad, but everything had to be purchased separately. $20 for a simple plate of pasta seemed outrageously overpriced to me. On the bright side, the servings were pretty large and I did have a leftover lunch for the next day. The food was just average, nothing out of the ordinary. I also expected the food to be presented better considering the high price you are paying for something that is extremely cheap to make.

I am glad that we had purchased a Groupon deal, which took $15 off our bill. Even with the deal, the meal was still overpriced. I bumped up the rating to 3 stars because of the Groupon, but without a deal this is a 2 and a half star restaurant.

Tip: Visit the bar from 3:00-5:00pm for free appetizers with the purchase of a drink.

Service

The waitress was definitely average at best. I expected more professional service for the price we were paying. The waitress was horrible on drink refills, did not offer any menu suggestions, didn't ask us about our meal, and overall just did not present a welcoming attitude.

Atmosphere

Mediterraneo has a modern design theme and plays trendy music. This is a fun place to go for a non-traditional Italian experience. One thing I did not appreciate about this restaurant was the cramped dining room - tables are very close together - this is a very small space! Also, street parking in the area is very difficult to find.

We later found out that this restaurant has free valet parking, so make sure to opt for the valet or you could end up driving around searching for parking for a half hour!

Final Remarks

Overall, I would probably not head back to Mediterraneo anytime soon. There are plenty of other Italian restaurant on Atwell Street in the Federal Hill are of Providence. Why go back to an overpriced restaurant that was average in every sense when there are so many other options to check out?
