Walkway Over the Hudson - Poughkeepsie, New York

At 1.28 miles long, New York’s Walkway Over the Hudson comes in as the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world. This attraction is relatively new, having just opened in 2009. In its’ first year, the walkway received more than 3 times its’ predicted traffic. It continues to attract upwards of 700,000 visitors per year.

History of The Walkway

A little bit of history…The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge was built in 1889 and was later updated in 2008. The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During your visit, you will be able to read up more about this historic bridge, including the initial building and restoration process.

A scenic walk, 200+ feet up

You can walk, bike, roller skate, or jog across the bridge. No matter which mode of transportation you choose, amazing views views will keep you company! The views of the mountains and river are amazing, especially during the fall season. As you walk, bike, or jog across the 212 feet tall wonder, beautiful panoramic views of the area accompany you. Open year-round, the walkway offers you the opportunity to view the region as it changes over the course of the year. Walkway Amenities

Picnicking tables and food are available before or after your walk. Many food trucks and vendors are typically on-site.

A new elevator just opened in 2014, which will help to connect Walkway Over the Hudson State Park to waterfront areas like Upper Landing and Waryas Park.

Various events take place throughout the year, including: a 5k race, a holiday lights celebration, and a special 4th of July spectacular.

The bridge is located in Poughkeepsie, which is in Dutchess county, about half way between New York City and Albany. It’s a great day trip from many areas including the beautiful Catskills.
